From Surf to Summit: A Day at Rincón de la Vieja
When the waves in Tamarindo took a break, I decided to explore the land instead. The Rincón de la Vieja Tour promised a day of adventure, and it delivered with hikes, waterfalls, and hot springs. Here’s how it went down.
A Sketchy Start, But a Promising Day
The day began with a bit of a surprise. My wife and I were picked up from our resort in Tamarindo by a guy in a small Suzuki. It felt a little sketchy at first, especially since we weren’t expecting a car. But seeing another tourist already in the vehicle, we decided to trust the process and hopped in. Our destination was El Jardín, a quaint souvenir shop and restaurant where we met the rest of our tour group. While the breakfast options weren’t anything to write home about, the coffee was decent enough to kickstart our adventure.
Once we were on the road, it took about an hour to reach the base of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The anticipation built as we approached the towering giant, ready to explore its natural wonders. The air was crisp, and the sun was just beginning to warm the landscape, promising a day full of discovery.
Hiking Through Nature’s Playground
Our guide, Gustavo, led us on a two-hour hike around the volcano’s crater. His knowledge of the local ecology and volcanic activity was impressive, and he shared fascinating insights about the flora and fauna we encountered along the way. The trail was a moderate challenge, weaving through lush tropical forests and offering glimpses of bubbling mud pots and fumaroles.
The highlight of the hike was undoubtedly the wildlife. We spotted white-faced monkeys swinging through the trees, colorful toucans perched high above, and even a curious coati sniffing around the underbrush. It was a reminder of the vibrant life that thrives in this unique ecosystem.
After the hike, a short walk from the tour van brought us to the Oropendola Waterfall. The path included a hanging bridge, adding a touch of adventure to the journey. The waterfall itself was a sight to behold, cascading into a blue lagoon. The water was refreshingly cold, and though the rocky bottom required some careful footing, it was well worth the plunge. I couldn’t resist jumping in, and the photos captured the moment perfectly.
Relaxation and Rejuvenation at the Hot Springs
Following our waterfall escapade, we headed to a restaurant within the National Park for lunch. The buffet-style meal was surprisingly good, with fresh watermelon juice that was a standout. It was the perfect way to refuel before the final leg of our tour.
The hot springs awaited us next, a short drive and a brief walk from the restaurant. Nestled in the tropical dry forest, the Río Negro Hot Springs featured nine different pools, each with varying temperatures. Gustavo explained the benefits of the mineral-rich waters, and we eagerly slipped into the soothing warmth.
After about 40 minutes of blissful relaxation, we tried the volcanic mud bath. Smoothing the clay mud over our skin felt like a natural spa treatment, and the showers nearby made it easy to wash off. The experience left us feeling rejuvenated and connected to the earth in a way that only nature can provide.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the adventure. The Rincón de la Vieja Tour was a perfect blend of exploration, relaxation, and a touch of thrill. It reminded me of why I love this nomadic lifestyle, always chasing the next wave or the next adventure. If you find yourself in Tamarindo, don’t miss the chance to experience this incredible tour.
