Exploring Xela: A Cultural Escape Beyond the Waves
When the waves are calm, I seek new adventures. The Xela City Tour promised a dive into Guatemala’s cultural heart, and it delivered an unforgettable experience. From historic landmarks to a premium rum tasting, this journey was a delightful detour from the surf.
Crossing the Border into Adventure
The journey began at the Guatemalan border, where the warm welcome from the tour team set the tone for the day. As someone who’s spent countless hours chasing waves along the coasts of Central America, the idea of exploring the cultural heart of Guatemala was a refreshing change of pace. The anticipation of discovering Xela, a city that has inspired the beautiful song “Luna de Xelajú,” was palpable.
The drive to Quetzaltenango, or Xela as the locals call it, took about three and a half hours. The scenery along the way was a tapestry of lush landscapes and vibrant communities, a reminder of the diverse beauty that Central America offers beyond its beaches. As we approached the city, the excitement of diving into its rich history and culture grew stronger.
Immersed in Xela’s Cultural Tapestry
Upon arrival, Xela did not disappoint. The city is a living museum, with its Central Park, Cathedral, Municipal Palace, and Theater offering a glimpse into its storied past. Walking through the streets, I felt a connection to the history that has shaped this place, much like the waves that have carved the coastlines I know so well.
Our guide was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories and insights that brought the city’s architecture and history to life. The highlight was undoubtedly the lunch, a feast of Guatemalan flavors that showcased the country’s rich culinary heritage. Each bite was a celebration of the land and its people, a delicious reminder of why I love exploring new places.
A Toast to History at Museo Casa Botran
The final stop on our tour was the Museo Casa Botran, a former rum mill turned museum. Here, I learned about the renowned Ron Botrán rum, a brand with over 80 years of history. The museum’s aging cellars and barrels were a testament to the craftsmanship and tradition that go into every bottle.
The rum tasting was an experience in itself, with each sip revealing layers of flavor and history. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration, a toast to the culture and heritage of Guatemala. As we made our way back to the border, the stunning scenery provided a perfect backdrop for reflection on the day’s adventures.
This journey through Xela was a reminder that there’s so much more to discover beyond the waves. Whether you’re a fellow surfer or simply a lover of culture and history, I highly recommend this tour for a taste of Guatemala’s heart and soul.
