He served as the general of the government army (Eastern Expeditionary Force) and was the first army general, playing a pivotal role in the Restoration. After being defeated in 1873 in the campaign to conquer Korea, he resigned from his government position and returned to Kagoshima. There, he and his students from a private school rebelled against the Meiji government in 1877 (Seinan War), attacking Kumamoto Castle, but failing to capture it. He passed away in Kagoshima the same year. Once a prominent leader in the Meiji Restoration, he was later pardoned and reinstated with the announcement of the Imperial Constitution in 1889.
