• 和紙ラボTOKYO - Discover the elegance of washi paper! This workshop offers the most in-depth experience for learning the art of washi making. You’ll engage in the entire process of creating washi paper from the ground up. The washi paper crafted in these workshops is entirely handmade and can endure for 1000 years. Preparation We’ll begin with a brief introduction, using simple materials to explain the history and unique qualities of washi paper. You’ll take part in the process, starting with the preparation of raw materials, which includes removing the outer bark of a tree, peeling, and beating. Making Japanese paper The next step is the papermaking experience. Participants will try various techniques such as tamesuki (thick washi), rakusui (washi with water-made patterns), nagashisuki (thin washi), and unryuu (washi with fiber patterns). (All are A5 size). At the end of the session, we serve Japanese sweets with “Japanese paper tea,” a unique offering! This workshop is ideal for artists aspiring to explore the world of washi paper and designers fascinated by the allure of handmade crafts. Over six hours, participants will create genuine Japanese paper.
