Senso-ji Temple - Sensō-ji ([sẽ̞ꜜɰ̃so̞ːʑi] ⓘ, 浅草寺, officially Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji (金龍山浅草寺), also known as Asakusa Kannon (浅草観音)), is a historic Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It holds the distinction of being Tokyo’s oldest temple and is one of the city’s most important. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The temple complex features the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and impressive gates. It is the most visited religious site globally, attracting over 30 million visitors each year.

Nakamise Shopping Street (Kaminarimon) - Between 1688 and 1735, the temple’s neighbors welcomed and assisted visitors to Sensoji Temple. As a reward for their hospitality, they were granted the exclusive right to open shops along the temple’s approach. This marked the beginning of Nakamise. During the Edo period, the 20 tea houses situated between Dempoin and Niousan-side were known as Yakudana. Meanwhile, the shops near Kaminari-mon, which sold toys, sweets, snacks, and souvenirs, were referred to as Hiramise.

Asakusa Kaminarimondori Shopping Street - The history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era are vividly preserved in Ueno and Asakusa. Ueno Park offers a spacious area to relax and explore various museums and galleries. At Ameyoko, starting in front of Ueno station, grocery stores and clothing shops are nestled alongside fishmongers. It becomes particularly bustling at the year’s end when many people go on shopping sprees. Asakusa, developed around Sensoji Temple, boasts numerous shops selling traditional Japanese goods and clothing, making it an excellent spot for souvenir shopping. The area is also renowned for its annual festivals, with the entire district participating in the grand Sanja Festival in May.

Asakusa Rokku Yumemachi Theatre - Asakusa Rokku earned its nickname from being the sixth district (rokku) within Asakusa Ward. It has a rich and vibrant history of entertaining Tokyo’s pleasure-seekers.
In 1841, Edo’s Kabuki theater troupes, deemed degenerate and subversive by the puritanical Tokugawa authorities, were exiled to the then-remote Asakusa farm fields outside the city limits. This move did not eliminate the issue but rather concentrated the ‘subversiveness’ in one area. Meiji Era officials were less conservative.
