On a clear day, the view is breathtaking: Annapurna II, Manaslu, and the Ganesh Himal massif. The road then descends into the expansive valley of the Trisuli, reaching the large town of Trisuli (548 m). From there, the path leads to Shyabru Besi. In Kalikhastan, the journey enters the Langtang National Park.
6-hour drive
Final altitude: 1900m
Accommodation: Night in the Lodge
TREKKING FROM SHYABRU TO LAMA HOTEL (2470 M)
Langtang National Park - The trek begins. The path crosses the village of Shyabru, then passes through terraced fields and a dense forest of oaks, alders, and bamboos. The Langtang Khola River is crossed via a large suspension bridge. A few ascents and descents in landslide-prone areas ensure the day is engaging, despite the few houses visible in this wooded region. The trail crosses the turbulent Langtang Khola again before a steep climb to Rimche at 2,250 meters. The descent towards Changtang, known as “Lama Hotel” (named after the first lodge built in this hamlet), is gentle.
TREKKING FROM LAMA HOTEL - GHORA TABELA - LANGTANG (3400 M)
Langtang Valley - The trail ascends gradually through the forest, offering glimpses of the clear blue river below through occasional breaks in the trees. Suddenly, as a corner is turned in the clearing, the majestic Langtang Lirung (7246 m) comes into view. After crossing a suspension bridge, the trail leads through yak-filled meadows to Ghora Tabela, a pastoral village mainly inhabited by Tibetans. Continuing upward, the trail steadily widens the valley, revealing numerous traditional Tamang houses and the first manis, the prayer walls. The approach to Langtang is marked by its Tibetan-style, flat-roofed houses.
TREKKING FROM LANGTANG TO KYANJIN GOMPA (3870 M)
Kyanjin Gompa - The path winds through the largest village in the valley and joins a ridge dominated by a large square chorten and its long prayer wall. From there, access to a small moraine allows contemplation of the Kyanjin gompa: the site is magnificent. Then a short descent towards the lodges and the local cheese dairy.
In the afternoon, there is an opportunity to make an excursion towards Kyanjin Ri (4773 m), which offers a remarkable viewpoint: Langtang Lirung (7227 m), Yala Peak (5050 m), Langshisha Ri (6560 m), the massive Urkeinmang Himal (6143 m), among many other peaks. If this excursion is not desired, the wide Langtang valley can be explored, which rises very gently towards the summer yak pastures.
ASCENT OF TSERGO RI (4984 M)
KYANJIN GOMPA - LAMA HOTEL (2470 M)
Lama Hotel - Descent by the same route as on the outward journey.
LAMA HOTEL TO THULO SHYABRU (2250 M)
Thulo Syabru - Descent by the route of the outward journey following the Langtang Khola, until a small path on the left is taken. The path is slightly rough in the middle of the ferns. A sumptuous viewpoint is reached. Later, a flat area is arrived at, revealing the village of Thulo Shyabru. Suspended from a ridge with its white chorten at the village entrance, it offers a beautiful viewpoint over the foothills of Tibet. At nightfall, the changing colors of trees, hills, and distant snow-capped peaks create pleasant memories and delight photographers.
THULO SHYABRU - THULO BHARKHU - KATHMANDU (1350 M)
Kathmandu - Return to the track with alternating coniferous forests and pastures. The last views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges follow one another before a long descent. Upon reaching the road, a car awaits to transport back to Kathmandu.
