The earliest literary reference to the city is from the 19th century BC, mentioned in Egyptian texts as Pihilum or Pehel. It was a bustling trade center with connections to Syria, Cyprus, and Egypt. Following the division of Alexander’s Empire, its name was Hellenized to Pella, in honor of Alexander’s birthplace.
