• Swakopmund Jetty - During the colonial era, Swakopmund served as a significant harbor despite its unsuitable conditions. Luderitz was located too far south, and Walvis Bay was under British control.

As a result, the Germans had to utilize Swakopmund. However, disembarking troops and settlers using surf boats was a perilous task due to the strong surf.

Following the outbreak of the Herero rebellion in January 1904, it became evident that there was insufficient anchoring space for the many ships delivering civilian goods and military supplies to the new German colony.

At times, up to 25 ships were anchored in the open sea at Swakopmund, and unloading them took several weeks.
