Glacier Lagoon - Guests will be greeted in the main parking area of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Safety equipment, included in the tour, will be provided. Begin the journey in a 4x4 vehicle to the glacier’s base, which is an adventure in itself. From there, a 5-20 minute hike on uneven terrain leads to the Ice Cave. As the glacier constantly evolves, the most beautiful and safest Ice Cave will be selected based on daily conditions.
The Ice Caves vary in size from 30-70 meters. Expect to see other groups in the vicinity. With ample time for exploration, photography, and learning about glacial history from the guide, this will be an unforgettable experience. Explore the mesmerizing blue ice of Iceland with our updated December Ice Cave Tour. This adventure takes you to breathtaking blue ice formations on the western side of Breiðamerkurjökull, a part of Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier. Depending on the conditions, participants may have the opportunity to explore one to three naturally occurring features, providing a genuine and ever-evolving blue ice experience. Access to these formations is via a guided glacier walk, led by experienced glacier guides.
The tour typically lasts about 3 hours, sometimes extending to 3.5 hours. Walking distances can vary, with the guide choosing the safest and most picturesque route each day. All necessary glacier equipment, such as microspikes or crampons, is supplied based on the terrain and features encountered during your tour.
Iceland’s ice caves are natural and constantly changing. For safety, the cave location, glacier route, or tour setup may be altered at the last minute due to weather conditions, ice movement, or guide evaluation. These changes ensure the safest and most fulfilling experience possible.

- Your safety is of the utmost importance. Ice Cave tours are weather dependent. Sometimes tours have to be cancelled with short notice due to weather conditions or safety concerns or. After periods of adverse weather, the caves can become flooded or unsafe to enter. If this happens we will always do our best to offer an alternative such as a glacier hike if weather conditions allow, however if this is not suitable we will also always offer a full refund.
