The historic Zhouzhuang, once known as Yaocheng, Zhenfengli, was established by the sovereign of the State Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). During the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhou Digonglang took up residence here, a man deeply committed to Buddhism. He and his spouse eventually bequeathed their wealth to Quanfu Temple, prompting the townspeople to rename the area Zhouzhuang (Zhou Village) in honor of their benevolence.
The town’s every nook and cranny is a testament to its artistic heritage. The Suzhou Tourism Bureau has sought the expertise of China’s foremost archaeologists to restore a decaying brick gate adorned with carvings in Zhouzhuang, yet the task has proven too complex for contemporary scholars to replicate the ancient craftsmanship.
Zhouzhuang’s charm is amplified by its waterways and lakes. Its 14 historic bridges, spanning the Yuan (1271 - 1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644 -1911) dynasties, are architectural marvels. Among them, the Double Bridge, which forms a perpendicular crossing over the waterway, is a must-see for visitors. The Fu’an Bridge, dating back to 1355, holds the title of the town’s most venerable bridge.
The layout of the town is harmoniously integrated with the rivers, with over 60% of its structures tracing their origins to the early Ming Dynasty. The Shen Ting (Hall of Shen), erected in 1742, and the Zhang Ting (Hall of Zhang) are particularly magnetic to sightseers. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to board a gondola and immerse themselves in the quaint charm of this aquatic town.
