Zhouzhuang, originally known as Yaocheng or Zhenfengli, was established by the ruler of the State of Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). In the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhou Digonglang, a devout Buddhist, settled here. He and his wife generously donated all their possessions to Quanfu Temple, prompting the locals to rename the town Zhouzhuang (Zhou Village) in honor of their generosity.
Every part of this ancient town is a masterpiece. The Suzhou Tourism Bureau has sought the expertise of China’s top archaeologists to restore a deteriorating carved brick gate in Zhouzhuang, yet none have been able to replicate the ancient craftsmanship.
The town is graced by the scenic beauty of its rivers and lakes. Fourteen ancient bridges, constructed during the Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, span the river. The Double Bridge, where two bridges intersect at a right angle over the stream, is a popular attraction. Fu’an Bridge, the oldest in Zhouzhuang, was built in 1355 and is another highlight.
The town’s residents constructed their homes and streets along the rivers, with over 60% of the buildings dating back to the early Ming Dynasty. Two notable structures that draw many visitors are Shen Ting (Hall of Shen), built in 1742, and Zhang Ting (Hall of Zhang). Visitors can also enjoy a gondola ride to fully appreciate the charm of this quaint water town.
