- The Lingering Garden - The Lingering Garden is a distinguished classical Chinese garden and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was commissioned by Xu Taishi, an official who was impeached and later exonerated, in 1593 CE. The garden is divided into four uniquely themed sections: East, Central, West, and North. The architectural elements are organized by section, offering unique styles and features during a guided tour.
- Canglang Pavilion (Blue Wave Pavilion) - The Pavilion is also known as the Great Wave Pavilion, Surging Wave Pavilion, or Blue Wave Pavilion. As a UNESCO heritage site, it was constructed in 1044 CE by Song dynasty poet Su Shunqin (1008–1048) on the site of a former imperial flower garden. The garden is situated on a branch of the Fengxi Stream, forming a lotus pond, and features 108 windows, each with a distinct design. Unlike other gardens, Canglang Pavilion highlights the harmony between human-made structures and the natural environment. Before entering, visitors can admire a beautiful green pool surrounded by weeping willows.
- Master-of-Nets Garden - The Master of the Nets Garden in Suzhou is one of China’s finest gardens. It showcases the exceptional skills of Chinese garden designers in blending art, nature, and architecture to create unique metaphysical masterpieces. The garden is renowned among connoisseurs for its mastery of techniques such as relative dimension, contrast, foil, sequence and depth, and borrowed scenery.

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou are a collection of gardens in Suzhou, spanning nearly a thousand years. These gardens, primarily created by scholars, established many essential elements of classical Chinese garden design, featuring constructed landscapes that emulate the natural beauty of rocks, hills, and rivers, complemented by strategically placed pavilions and pagodas. This is precisely why visitors are encouraged to dedicate an entire day to explore the four most renowned gardens in Suzhou, which are about a 1.5-hour drive from Shanghai.
-
The four most exquisite gardens have been chosen by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, showcasing the artistry of Suzhou-style classical gardens.

Opting to drive from Shanghai instead of taking a bullet train (despite its frequent departures) can help avoid the hassle of check-in and check-out at the often chaotic and time-consuming train station. The highway between Shanghai and Suzhou is in excellent condition and is very safe to travel.
