- Master-of-Nets Garden - The Master of the Nets Garden is one of China’s most exquisite gardens. It is recognized alongside other classical Suzhou gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This garden showcases the exceptional ability of Chinese garden designers to blend art, nature, and architecture into unique metaphysical masterpieces. The Master of the Nets is especially esteemed by garden enthusiasts for its mastery of techniques such as relative dimension, contrast, foil, sequence and depth, and borrowed scenery. Originally built in 1140, it was restored in the 18th century as part of the residence of a retired official who became a fisherman, which inspired its name. A remarkable feature of the garden is its spatial design: the maze of courtyards, with windows framing different garden views, is cleverly crafted to create the illusion of a much larger space.
- Panmen Gate - Panmen Gate is the historic entrance to Suzhou, with a history that stretches back 2,400 years. It was the only ancient gate equipped with both a water entrance and a higher land entrance. The current gate structure was rebuilt in 1986, but its origins can be traced back to the Yuan dynasty during the height of the Mongol empire. Panmen Gate is part of a larger scenic area that includes two other main attractions. Wumen Bridge, once the highest bridge in Suzhou, served as the main passageway to the land entrance. Ruiguang Pagoda was the city’s first such structure, and its current form has been reconstructed from bricks supported by wooden platforms.
- Mosque - Salat at Taipingfang Mosque, which was constructed in 1928.
- Shantang Street - Shantang Street is a renowned historic pedestrian street in Suzhou. Locals refer to it as “Seven-Li Shantang,” with seven-li being an old Chinese measure of distance, approximately 3.5 km. The street stretches from Changmen in the east to Tiger Hill in the west, with a total length of about 3,829.6 meters (2.38 miles). It was designated as one of China’s “National Historic and Cultural Streets” in 2015. The construction of the Shantang Canal began in 825 AD during the Tang Dynasty by Bai Juyi, a poet and the governor of Suzhou, to connect Tiger Hill with the city. The sludge excavated during construction formed a dam along the canal’s north bank, known as Baigong Dam in honor of Bai Juyi. A street was built on this dam, eventually becoming the modern-day Shantang Street.
