Setting Sail from Surfers Paradise

The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over Surfers Paradise as I boarded the Beachcomber boat, ready for a day of adventure and relaxation. The crew, Andreas, Amanda, and Cooper, greeted us with warm smiles and a laid-back vibe that immediately set the tone for the day. As a professional surfer who’s spent years chasing waves across Central America, I know a good crew when I see one, and these folks were top-notch.

We set off along the Nerang River, passing by the glamorous houses that line the waterway. The boat was just the right size for our small group, creating an intimate atmosphere that made it easy to chat with fellow travelers. As we cruised towards the Gold Coast Broadwater, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement. The promise of pelican feeding and a picnic on a secluded island was enough to make any ocean lover’s heart race.

Pelican Feeding Frenzy

Our first stop was the famous pelican feeding site, where nearly a hundred of these majestic birds gather for their lunchtime feast. Watching them swoop down from the sky, their wings outstretched, was a sight to behold. The crew brought the boat close to shore, allowing us to disembark and get a closer look at the action. It was a photographer’s dream, and I found myself snapping away, trying to capture the perfect shot.

The kids on board were particularly thrilled, their laughter mingling with the calls of the pelicans. It was a reminder of the simple joys that nature can bring, something I often experience when riding the perfect wave. As we returned to the boat, I couldn’t help but think about how this experience was a different kind of thrill, one that didn’t require a surfboard but was just as exhilarating.

A Picnic on Wavebreak Island

Next, we anchored at Wavebreak Island, a hidden gem only accessible by boat. The crew handed out picnic baskets filled with a delightful cheese and fruit platter, along with a couple of glasses of Prosecco. As I settled onto the sandy shore, the sun warming my skin, I felt a deep sense of contentment. This was the kind of day that reminded me why I love the ocean so much.

Some of the guests chose to stay on the boat, enjoying the float toys and the crystal-clear waters. I, however, couldn’t resist the call of the island. With a fishing rod in hand, I tried my luck at catching something from the beach. It was a relaxing way to spend the afternoon, the gentle lapping of the waves providing a soothing soundtrack.

As we made our way back to Surfers Paradise, passing the southern end of South Stradbroke Island, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The combination of nature, good company, and a touch of luxury made for an unforgettable experience. It’s not every day you get to feed pelicans, enjoy a gourmet picnic, and explore a secluded island all in one trip.
