Java’s Hidden Treasures: A Road Trip Through Mount Bromo and Beyond
Inspired by my love for road trips and the open road, I embarked on a journey through Java, Indonesia, to explore its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures. Join me as I recount my experiences on the Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater tour.
A Journey Through Java’s Hidden Gems
As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories it holds. My recent adventure in Java, Indonesia, was no exception. The Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater Tour was a whirlwind of breathtaking landscapes and cultural encounters that left me with a heart full of memories.
Our journey began in Surabaya, where we were greeted by our guide, Nano, and our driver, Bams. Their warmth and professionalism set the tone for the days ahead. As we drove through the rural areas and villages, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the small towns of America that I hold dear. The simplicity and charm of these places reminded me of the countless road trips I took across the Midwest, where every town had a story to tell.
The Magic of Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo was our first major stop, and it did not disappoint. The early morning drive to Kingkong Hill was reminiscent of those dawn drives through the Great Plains, where the horizon seemed endless and the sky painted in hues of orange and pink. As we sipped on hot coffee, waiting for the sun to rise, I felt a familiar sense of anticipation, much like waiting for the first light to hit the Rockies.
The view from Kingkong Hill was nothing short of spectacular. The sight of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru standing majestically against the morning sky was a reminder of nature’s grandeur. The sea of sand below, with its iconic jeeps, added a touch of adventure to the scene. It was a moment that took me back to the vast deserts of Arizona, where the landscape stretches as far as the eye can see.
Discovering Sukamade Village
While the natural wonders of Java were awe-inspiring, it was the visit to Sukamade Village that truly captured my heart. The village, with its ever-smiling locals and lush jungle scenery, was a slice of paradise. Riding atop a 4x4 through the jungle was an exhilarating experience, akin to the off-road adventures I once had in the backcountry of Utah.
Meeting the locals and observing their way of life was a humbling experience. Their warmth and hospitality reminded me of the small-town charm I often write about. And then, there were the baby turtles. Watching them make their way to the sea was a poignant reminder of the circle of life and the importance of preserving our natural world.
As I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and the people I met along the way. Java, with its rich tapestry of landscapes and cultures, has left an indelible mark on my heart. It was a journey that reminded me of the beauty of the open road and the stories waiting to be discovered.
