Meet the rafting team at the take-out just south of Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge on the Icefields Parkway. Leave the vehicle there and ride the rafting bus upstream to the put-in.
After getting geared up, participants receive a safety briefing and paddling instructions before launching. No previous rafting experience is necessary.
The trip begins with approximately 20 minutes of easier floating, offering time to practise paddling and work together as a crew. Then the Sunwapta reveals what it is known for.
Once the whitewater begins, the river rarely lets up. Class 3 sections are linked by fast-moving Class 2 whitewater, with rapids running one into the next and little downtime in between. Following the guide’s commands and paddling as a team, participants ride through wave after wave, including the locally renowned Whopper.
After approximately 1.5 hours on the river, the trip finishes back at the vehicle, ready to continue exploring the Icefields Parkway.
