- Barong & Kris Dance - The Barong is a revered Balinese dance featuring a mythical creature with four legs, resembling a lion or tiger, operated by two performers like a circus act.
The Barong Dance depicts the legendary battle between good and evil. In the tale, “Rangda” is the mother of Erlangga, the 10th-century King of Bali, who was cursed by Erlangga’s father for practicing “black magic.”
After becoming a widow, she summoned evil spirits from the jungle to pursue Erlangga. During the battle, her dark magic forces were so powerful that Erlangga sought the Barong’s assistance. The Barong arrived with Erlangga’s soldiers, and a fierce battle ensued.
Rangda cast a spell causing Erlangga’s soldiers to attempt suicide with their “poisoned keris,” aiming at their own stomachs and chests.
The Barong countered with a spell that made their bodies immune to the sharp keris.
Ultimately, the Barong emerged victorious, and Rangda fled.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary - Located not far from Ubud Palace, Ubud Monkey Forest is in the southern part of Ubud Downtown, Padang Tegal Village. In Balinese, the monkey forest is called “Wanara Wana.” Ubud Monkey Forest plays a crucial role in preserving the monkey habitat in Bali.
The friendly monkeys within the sacred rainforest of Padang Tegal Village are commonly known as “Long-Tailed Macaques.” They are divided into three groups. In 2011, there were approximately 605 monkeys, including 39 adult males, 38 sub-adult males, 194 adult females, 243 juveniles, and 91 infants.
These monkeys are believed to be the divine guardians of the Dalem Agung Temple, located in the forest’s center. Three holy temples are situated within Ubud Monkey Forest, estimated to have been built in the mid-14th century.
Dalem Agung Temple, located northwest of the forest, is considered the most important temple. The Permandian Temple is on the west side of the forest, and the Prajapati Temple, dedicated to Dewa Ciwa (Shiva God), is on the southeast side. It is one of the Khayangan Temples in Padang Tegal Village.
