- Isle of Lewis - Gress Raiders Monument
The Gress monument serves as a poignant reminder of the crofters’ struggle for land rights. The poverty and injustice endured under the oppressive landlords threatened their very existence. After facing the horrors of the First World War, returning ex-servicemen found the government’s promise of land and homes unfulfilled. Unrest ensued, and they eventually triumphed in their fight for land.
The tour will pause here to appreciate the beautifully designed cairn, which creatively reflects trenches and waves, honoring the struggle and determination of those brave land raiders.
From the Gress Memorial, one can see an ancient monument across the river. It consists of the ruins of a small pre-Reformation Church within a still-used graveyard.
It is dedicated to St Aula (St Olaf), the only example of a Norse Saint’s commemoration in the Western Isles.
- Isle of Lewis - Rocks, Sand & Sea… Let’s Go Walking
DISCOVER this magnificent Hebridean seascape on the second stop of the tour. The walk will pass a lily pond surrounded by peaty, heather-covered hills and lead onto a glorious stretch of sand.
The plan is to stroll along Garry beach, head over to the majestic sea stacks rising like giant teeth, and marvel at their rugged beauty. Take your time to soak it all in… DISCOVER.
Breathe in the scents of the ocean and the flowers of the machair.
The tallest and most substantial of the three stacks rising from the sands is called Caisteal a’Mhorair (the Castle of the Nobleman), named for the remains of a possible medieval castle atop this stack.
The Bridge to Nowhere earned its name because beyond the bridge, there is no road. It was built as part of a planned new route along the east coast of Lewis from Tolsta to Ness, one of the many ambitious plans by Lord Leverhulme that never came to fruition.
- Museum Nan Eilean Stornoway - Curious?… Let’s Discover
The final stop of the day is at the beautiful surroundings of Lews Castle, where Museum nan Eilean is located. Here, visitors CONNECT with the rich heritage and distinctive culture of the Outer Hebrides.
The visit begins with an immersive and relaxing film, a favorite among many visitors. The film allows you to CONNECT with the starkly changing landscapes across the Outer Hebrides and beautifully captures the changing seasons and moods of the islands.
“A Taste of the Islands” is the main gallery, featuring four sections based on the Land, the Sea, Working Life, and Community Life. Here, visitors can get up close and CONNECT with the original and world-famous Lewis Chessmen.
In Lews Castle, wander the star-lined corridors and appreciate the splendor of the opulent rooms offering a marvelous view of Stornoway harbor before the tour concludes, leaving you with fond memories of your Hebridean adventure.
