Ourika is a narrative inspired by the real-life experiences of a woman who was acquired as a child (circa 1786) by the Chevalier de Boufflers, a colonial leader in Senegal, and presented as a present to the de Beauvau family.

The book represents a pivotal moment in the history of European literature. It stands as the inaugural French work to portray a black female protagonist with a nuanced psychological profile. It is recognized as the first piece of literature to feature “a sophisticated and learned black female storyteller,” and is “among the most enthralling pieces of short fiction in the French language, offering a remarkably contemporary discourse on racial dynamics.”
