Wetlands blend with agricultural fields and rocky outcrops, while forests coexist with scrublands. This diversity supports a wide variety of wildlife and bird species. You might spot a crocodile or, with some luck, the elusive grey slender loris. A small herd of deer may visit the Minneriya reservoir in the early morning. If you schedule your safari for August, September, or October, you might witness the ‘Elephant Gathering,’ where over 150 elephants congregate in one location. It’s believed that elephants from surrounding areas gather here annually. Opting for the evening safari, which is the optimal time to explore the park, allows you to observe elephants bathing and various bird species returning to their nests at day’s end. After your 3-hour nature experience, you will return to the hotel.

During the dry season, a significant number of Sri Lankan elephants are drawn to the grassy areas surrounding the reservoir. The Minneriya tank plays a crucial role in supporting a large herd, with approximately 150-200 elephants gathering there. Some reports suggest that the number of elephants can reach as high as 700. These elephants migrate from Wasgamuwa National Park, taking advantage of the food and shelter provided by the park’s forest. Tourists are particularly attracted to Minneriya during the dry season, primarily to observe the elephants.
