- Dean House - Take a moment to admire the large brown house with green shutters on our left. This is the Dean House. Curious about the Deans? Dean House - Take a moment to admire the large brown house with green shutters on our left. This is the Dean House. Curious about the Deans? Harriet Dean, a clever woman, purchased this land just before her husband Frederick went to California in search of gold. Although he didn’t find gold, he returned to Springfield to a welcoming home. Quite a pleasant surprise! Plus, living next to the Lincolns is a bonus.
-
First Presbyterian Church - Notice the red brick church across the street on our left? That’s the First Presbyterian Church, also known as the Lincoln Family Church. The Lincolns began attending in 1850 after the tragic loss of their three-year-old son Edward. They sought comfort and understanding in the church.
-
Lincoln Home National Historic Site Visitor Center - Stop at the intersection with 8th Street. Look at the house across the street, on the corner, to the left. It’s a tan house with green shutters. This is Abraham Lincoln’s home, the only one he ever purchased.
NOTE: The tour covers over 1.5 miles, includes more than 24 audio stories, and takes about 1-2 hours to complete.
Purchase once, enjoy for a year! Perfect for extended visits and return trips over the next 12 months.
-
Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site - Pause here and observe the three-story brick building on our left. This is where Lincoln worked in the mid-1800s. Clients visited the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices. Imagine being one of them! You’re here due to a dispute with your neighbor over chickens that have been damaging your gardens. You seek advice from either Abraham Lincoln or his partner William H. Herndon. These were their law offices.
-
Old State Capitol State Historic Site - Take a moment to appreciate the Old Capitol State Building on our right. It’s unmissable! We just saw Lincoln’s law office, and now this is where his political career truly took off. Springfield residents may not have all known Lincoln the Lawyer personally, but they likely knew Lincoln the Politician! Shaking hands, sharing jokes, and attending public events, Lincoln was everywhere. Standing at six-foot-four, he was hard to overlook!
-
Union Square Park - The papers Lincoln holds here are his second inaugural address, delivered in March 1865. The Civil War was nearing its conclusion, and slavery in the United States was soon to be abolished. A month later, Lincoln would be assassinated. More on these topics will follow. For now, here is perhaps the most famous excerpt from Lincoln’s speech:
-
Lincoln Statue - Here we see a different, more contemplative version of Lincoln. He’s clutching his coat against the cold, gazing into the distance. What might he be pondering? His time in Springfield, his aspirations? Or perhaps he’s steeling himself for war.
-
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum - Pause here. On our left is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This expansive library is 50 percent larger than any other dedicated to a US president. Inside are presidential documents, early speech drafts, and more, though the most valuable artifacts are reserved for research. The museum also features life-size dioramas depicting Lincoln’s life.
-
Lincoln Depot - This red brick building near the train tracks on the corner of East Monroe is Lincoln Depot. It wasn’t named that in Lincoln’s time; it was simply The Depot. From here, Lincoln’s hands became sore from shaking so many hands as he bid farewell to friends, colleagues, and countless strangers. He was on his way to Washington to be inaugurated as the next president of the United States.
