The tour begins at the Riva, the renowned coastal promenade of Split, often referred to as the city’s living room!

The guide will introduce Croatia, Split, and the itinerary.

• Diocletian’s Palace - From the Riva promenade, there will be a 10-minute introduction to one of the best-preserved Roman monuments from the 4th century AD - an impressive palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian.

Initially, the palace served as the Emperor’s luxurious retirement home, and later, in the 7th century, it transformed into the medieval city of Split.

The tour will enter the Palace through the Southern gate and explore its main parts over the next 90+ minutes.

• Diocletian Palace Substructures - From the Riva promenade, the tour will enter the Palace through the Bronze gate to visit the remarkably preserved 1700-year-old basements, known as Diocletian’s palace substructures.

In the basements, you will learn about Diocletian’s life: his rise to emperor, his reign, his years of glory, and his eventual abdication and “retirement.”

The tour will discuss the construction of his Palace, its ingenious architectural concept, and the precious stone from the island of Brac used in its construction.

The importance of the nearby Roman capital town Salona for the development of Split in the 7th century will be explained, along with how invaders from the north destroyed Salona and “helped” convert the Palace into the medieval town of Split.

• The Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace - The central square of the Palace.

It is surrounded by diverse architectural styles and monuments from the 3000-year-old Egyptian era, through the ancient Roman period, various medieval styles (cathedral bell tower, noble palaces…), to modern and contemporary ones.

• Vestibulum of Diocletian’s Palace - This beautiful circular building served as Diocletian’s lounge and was the entrance to the Emperor’s private chambers.

Occasionally, there is an opportunity to enjoy amazing Dalmatian choirs - “Klape” - singing here!

• Eastern (Silver) Gate - The Eastern Palace gate and the beginning of the main Decumanus street.
• Nadalina cokolada - A fantastic local chocolate producer. Guests will be treated to a couple of sweet delights with Mediterranean fruit and herbal flavors.

Unfortunately, closed on Sundays, so this visit will be skipped then.

• Grgur Ninski Statue - The large statue of the famous Croatian archbishop from the 10th century, created by the renowned Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic.
• Split Synagogue - A visit to the 16th-century Medieval Jewish Ghetto.

Additionally, if interested, there is the 3rd oldest operating synagogue in Europe located here in Split.

• The Golden Gate - The main entrance to the Palace.
  The tour will discuss the “people trap” Gate’s concept, the Roman streets Cardo and Decumanus, and the road to Salona, the ancient Roman capital town.
• Pjaca - The main square of the Medieval town of Split.
  The City Hall building and many other beautiful palaces can be seen around this square.
• Fruit’s Square (Trg Brace Radic) - Vocni trg (Fruit’s Square) is the second most important square of medieval Split. It was the former marketplace.
  At the center of the square stands a statue of Marko Marulic, a prominent Croatian poet and humanist from the 15th century, known as the “Father of Croatian literature.”
• Prokurative - Prokurative Square in Split, Croatia, is a stunning open space surrounded by neo-Renaissance buildings, often hosting cultural events and outdoor performances. With its elegant architecture and lively atmosphere, it is often compared to St. Mark’s Square in Venice, Italy, known for its magnificent palaces and historic landmarks.
