- Diocletian Palace Substructures - The basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace, known as the substructures, are among the best-preserved complexes from classical antiquity. This expansive area is a key reason why Split’s historical center was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979.
- The Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace - The Peristyle, the central square of the Palace, was designed for Emperor Diocletian, celebrated as the living son of Jupiter, and is surrounded by many temples. The Emperor would appear under the architrave of the central Protyron, where subjects would kneel, kiss the hem of his scarlet cloak, or prostrate themselves before him.
- Vestibul - The Vestibule, or Rotonda, is the first section of the imperial corridor in Diocletian’s Palace leading from the Peristyle, once the formal entrance to the imperial apartments. Built by the early 4th century, it is a circular hall, originally topped with a dome, 17 meters high and 12 meters in diameter, serving as a grand meeting hall for select audiences like ambassadors.
- Cathedral of Saint Domnius - A Roman temple, mausoleum, and church, depending on perspective. The visit is only from the outside (entrance not included), but detailed information will be provided for those interested in visiting after the tour.
- Temple of Jupiter - Jupiter, the god of the sky and thunder, is the supreme deity in ancient Roman religion and mythology. The Temple was historically converted into a baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The visit is only from the outside. On the way to the next location (Golden Gate), the tour passes through a narrow street between the ancient temple and a medieval building, believed by locals to be the narrowest street in the world, named “Let me pass street.”
- The Golden Gate - Also known as “the Northern Gate,” it is one of the four main Roman gates into Split’s old town. Part of Diocletian’s Palace, it served as the main entrance for the Emperor and was ornately decorated. Sealed off during the Middle Ages, it lost its columns and statuary but was reopened and restored in modern times, now serving as a tourist attraction.
- Grgur Ninski Statue - The 8.5-meter (28 ft) tall statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović in Split is a popular tourist site, evidenced by the worn, shiny toe of the statue, which is said to bring good luck when rubbed.
- Marmontova Ulica - Although a conqueror, Napoleon’s marshal Marmont is credited with the urbanization of Dalmatian cities, and in gratitude, the citizens of Split named their most beautiful street after him.
- Prokurative - Republic Square is a large, open area surrounded on three sides by a collection of ornate neo-Renaissance buildings known as the Prokurative.
- Fruit’s Square (Trg Brace Radic) - The final stop of the tour is a charming square where women once sold fruits. Visitors will learn about important monuments in the square, such as the statue of Marko Marulić, the father of Croatian literature. It is also an ideal location for stories about Croatian history and gastronomy.
