- Riva Harbor - Let’s start at the Riva, the heart of life in Split. Here, people take their time, enjoying the sun, sipping coffee, chatting, and gazing at the sea. Each corner has its own unique rhythm, regulars, and stories.
From here, we’ll explore the old town and Diocletian’s Palace. Discover how locals still reside within Roman walls, where laundry hangs between centuries, and life continues on the same streets once walked by emperors.
We’ll pause for a snack, share some stories that rarely appear in guidebooks, and experience the city as the locals do—slowly, through taste, sound, and everyday moments.
- Diocletian Palace Substructures - Moving away from the waterfront, we’ll descend into the basements of Diocletian’s Palace. Here, time feels tangible, and you can almost feel the hands that crafted these stones 1,700 years ago.
Every wall holds traces of life—stories of labor, trade, and quiet perseverance. This is where the city began, and where its heartbeat still resonates.
-
The Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace - Emerging from narrow streets, we arrive at Peristil, the open space of the imperial square. Here, intriguing tales unfold about traditional and modern Split and our leisurely way of life (pomalo = take it easy).
-
Cathedral of Saint Domnius - Standing in the only square within the palace, Peristil, you can’t miss the beautiful, tall bell tower. Almost hidden behind it, protected, is the Cathedral of Split, one of the smallest and oldest cathedrals in the world.
-
Temple of Jupiter - Leaving the waterfront, we enter the Palace Substructures and head towards the Temple of Jupiter. This location was chosen to symbolize the divine connection between Emperor Diocletian and Jupiter, the Ancient Roman God of the sky and thunder, and king of the Gods. During the Middle Ages, the Temple was converted into a baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
-
Let Me Pass (Pusti me da prodjem) Street - On our way to the Temple of Jupiter, we’ll walk through a narrow street, situated between the ancient temple and a medieval building, now a hotel. Locals believe this is the narrowest street in town, known as “The let me pass street.”
-
Pjaca - As the ancient city walls could no longer contain life, Split expanded westward. This area became known as the “new old town,” where northern and southern Europe meet in stone. Every street here showcases a blend of influences, layered over time, yet still unmistakably Split.
-
Nadalina cokolada - A day is always better with a touch of chocolate. As we near the end of our tour, we’ll stop at one of my favorite chocolate spots—Nadalina. I’ll share stories about food production while we sample locally flavored chocolate.
-
The Golden Gate - The Golden Gate (Latin: Porta Aurea) is one of the four main Roman gates into Diocletian’s Palace. Located on the road to the north, towards Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and Diocletian’s birthplace, you’ll learn about ancient military strategy in the Palace and discover some hidden buildings nearby.
-
Grgur Ninski Statue - At the northern wall of the Palace, in front of the Grgur Ninski sculpture, we’ll conclude our tour. Here, surrounded by the 4th-century antique wall, 20th-century art, and modern life, we’ll honor local tradition and make a wish.
Thank you for joining this journey and allowing the sharing of love for this town with you.
