Spectacular must-do if you love nature - This private tour to Teide National Park was the highlight of our three cruise ship stops in the Canary Islands. Our amazing guide was Belén. She contacted us by WhatsApp the day before and suggested we meet earlier than our chosen 9:30 am reservation to beat the crowds and have more time enjoying the scenery. We ended up meeting around 8:45 am and that was perfect. It was overcast when we met so we were concerned about the view from the top. But that concern faded when we realized that we were headed way above the cloud cover. It was about 1 hour 20 minute drive to the National Park. The scenery changes dramatically as one goes higher in elevation. In contrast to the barren lava landscape of Lanzarote, Tenerife is lush with forests of Canary Islands pines. Once high enough, you have views of the pine trees, a sea of clouds below you, and Mount Teide in the background. Belén stopped at several viewpoints along the way. As one goes higher, the forests give way to brush and then lava snd multicolored/layered sedimentary rock since this whole area was under the ocean 16 million years ago. Even the lava flows on Mount Teide were of different colors based on different eruptions. The lava sculptures were spectacular, as were all the views of the volcanoes (300 volcanoes on the island). We had opted for the cable car to go to the 11,663 foot level of the volcano. The ship excursions did not have this option. We were a bit early for our reserved time slot, so we checked out the very nice visitor center. There was a cable car about every 10 minutes (8 minute ride). Be prepared to stand as there are about 30 people in a car and only seats for two. The view from the top is just incredible. You look down on the huge calderas of other volcanos and the sea of clouds in the distance. It’s cold and windy at the top, so dress warmly and wear shoes that have a good grip like hiking or athletic shoes. There was also a place we stopped where NASA trained their astronauts for lunar landings. Indeed, it looks like landscape you might find on the moon or Mars, and looks down on other collapsed volcanoes. Belén is very friendly and knowledgeable. She provided extensive narration along the drive, both up and down, and stopped at places you would not know about if you try driving on your own. She also took us on another route back to our ship so that we could see some of the nice coastal communities. A very enjoyable day indeed!

Fantastic excursion with great guide - We made this private trip together with Diego, who picked us up in the car at the cruise terminal and also brought us back. There were no other people there, so he could respond well to our wishes. Diego imparted a lot of knowledge to us and was able to design the ride so that we could avoid the biggest rush. Teide was lying in the snow in sunshine - a great sight. The tour goes to the national park at a good 2000m, not to Mount Teide itself. Which is perfectly sufficient, however, because it gives you a better impression of the landscape in the national park and its volcanic origin. If you still want to book the trip, you can also take a cable car to the summit. Afterwards Diego showed us the place Orotava with its historic buildings and gardens, which we also liked. Both the provider and the excursion I can only recommend for smaller or larger groups who appreciate an individualizable excursion.
