Sailing and Snorkeling: A Caribbean Adventure with Sea Turtles
Drawn by the promise of swimming with sea turtles, I embarked on a snorkeling adventure at Turtle Cove in St. Thomas. Join me as I recount the thrill of exploring the vibrant underwater world and the laid-back charm of sailing the Caribbean Sea.
Setting Sail on The VI Cat
The sun was high in the sky as I made my way to the wooden dock at Marriott’s Frenchman’s Cove, ready for another day of adventure on the Caribbean Sea. The VI Cat, a sleek 54-foot catamaran, awaited with its sails furled, promising a day of exploration and relaxation. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the allure of snorkeling with sea turtles at Turtle Cove was irresistible. The crew, led by Captain Greg, welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a laid-back vibe that set the tone for the day.
After a quick safety briefing, we were off, the catamaran gliding smoothly over the azure waters. The gentle breeze and the sound of classic rock playing in the background made for a perfect start to the journey. As we sailed towards Little Buck Island, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom and excitement, the kind that only the open sea can provide.
Diving into Turtle Cove
Arriving at Turtle Cove, the anticipation was palpable. The crew handed out snorkeling gear, and I paired up with a fellow adventurer as my snorkel buddy. With a choice between taking the steps or jumping off the side, I opted for the latter, eager to immerse myself in the warm Caribbean waters. The moment I hit the water, I was transported to another world, surrounded by vibrant marine life.
Following our guide, Rachel, we explored the underwater landscape, spotting colorful fish and even a nurse shark gliding gracefully below. Though the sea turtles were elusive that day, the experience was no less magical. The water was clear, and the gentle current made for a leisurely swim, allowing us to take in the beauty of the reef at our own pace.
Getting back onto the catamaran was a bit of a challenge, with the waves gently rocking the boat. But with a bit of effort and a helping hand from the crew, we were all safely back on board, ready to continue our journey.
A Relaxing Return
As we set sail back to the dock, the atmosphere on The VI Cat was one of camaraderie and contentment. The crew served up rum punch and light snacks, and the music played on, creating a festive mood. The return trip was a time to relax, share stories, and soak up the sun, the perfect end to a day of adventure.
Reflecting on the experience, I was reminded of the simple joys of island life and the incredible beauty of the Caribbean. Whether you’re a seasoned ocean lover or a first-time snorkeler, the Turtle Cove Tour is an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of the sea. Until next time, keep riding those waves and exploring the wonders of the ocean!
