• White Pockets - Situated far from the usual trails and close to the renowned Wave. Unlike The Wave, visiting White Pocket does not require a permit. White Pocket consists of a collection of domes and ridges spanning an area of one square mile, beneath a larger mesa bordered by similar rock formations. In this context, a pocket refers to a relatively small land area distinctly different from its surroundings, which, like much of the plateau, are sandy plains sparsely dotted with bushes and small trees. The predominant rock color is white or light grey, contrasting with the red of the Coyote Buttes, yet the general features are similar—swirling, thin-layered strata, adjacent layers of contrasting colors, and intriguing erosive formations. Additional colorful pockets can be found further south and east on the plateau, some officially named but most unrecognized. There are several dozen locations, each with the potential for photogenic formations.
