- Canyonlands National Park - Shaka Guide’s tour of Canyonlands National Park takes visitors to the Island in the Sky district, a geological wonder with breathtaking views that extend for hundreds of miles.
- Monitor and Merrimac Rock Formations - The two buttes visible from this viewpoint, the Monitor and the Merrimac, are named for their resemblance to the first American-made ironclad warships. These ships, built during the Civil War, played a pivotal role in ushering in the modern era of naval warfare.
- Navajo Rocks Main Parking Lot - Mountain biking is a favored activity in Canyonlands and its surrounding areas. The Navajo Rocks trail offers a singletrack experience with varying difficulty from smooth to technical. Continue driving as the guide shares more about this location.
- Dead Horse Point State Park - Located just off the road to Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point State Park sits on the same mesa as Island in the Sky but provides a completely unique view. Discover the ancient and modern history of this popular state park and scenic overlook.
- Island in the Sky - The Canyonlands Island in the Sky Visitor Center is the only location in the district offering potable water and flushing toilets. Stop here to pay the entrance fee, consult with a ranger, and explore the bookstore.
- Shafer Canyon Overlook - From this viewpoint, observe the Shafer Trail as it winds down the mountain through a series of narrow switchbacks. For those feeling adventurous with the right vehicle, consider taking the Shafer Trail back to Moab after the tour.
- Mesa Arch - The trail to Mesa Arch is an easy half-mile round trip over dirt and slickrock. The views at Mesa Arch, especially at sunrise, are spectacular. Many share this sentiment, as the parking lot fills up while it’s still dark. Start early to secure a spot! If not, try visiting in the afternoon after completing the tour.
- Candlestick Tower Overlook - The next stop features another iconic formation in the park, the Candlestick Tower. Its name derives from its shape, resembling a melting candlestick. This 450-foot tower is a popular rock climbing destination. During fall or winter, visitors might spot climbers ascending the tower.
- Buck Canyon Overlook - Buck Canyon Overlook provides a stunning view of the beautiful geological layers in Canyonlands and the distant mountains.
- White Rim Overlook Trail - At the White Rim Overlook, hike a relatively flat, 1.8-mile round-trip trail to enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the canyon. Alternatively, a short walk from the parking lot leads to an overlook showcasing the Colorado River’s handiwork in shaping the landscape.
- Orange Cliffs Overlook - From this overlook, view the orange cliff section of Glen Canyon Recreational Area bordering Canyonlands. The maze district, the park’s most remote area, is also visible.
- Grand View Point Overlook - From the grand viewpoint, observe a complex network of canyons carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers. For those up for it, a two-mile round-trip hike leads to the tip of the Island in the Sky mesa, one of the park’s best hikes.
- Green River Overlook - This overlook offers another breathtaking view of the canyon over a thousand feet below, carved by the serene yet powerful Green River. The river, originating from Wyoming on the left side of the continental divide, shaped much of the landscape in this region.
- Aztec Butte Trail - The Aztec Butte Trail is a 1.7-mile round-trip hike leading to ancestral Puebloan stone granary structures with stunning views. The granary was constructed approximately 800 years ago, around 1200 AD.
- Whale Rock - Whale Rock is named for its resemblance to a blue whale, though it requires some imagination to see it. A one-mile round-trip hike leads to the giant rock, offering great views from the top, rated as easy to moderate.
- Upheaval Dome - Known by several nicknames, including Utah’s Belly Button, this structure is Canyonlands’ biggest mystery due to scientific disagreement on its formation. Two exploration options exist: a one-mile round-trip trail to the overlooks (recommended) or an eight-mile trail around the crater’s ridge, which is challenging and where most park rescues occur.
- Alcove Springs Trail - This is a challenging 12-mile round-trip hike with a steep descent into the canyon, where two 500-foot rock towers named Moses and Zeus can be found.
