Soaring Above South Padre Island

As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and feeling the ocean’s embrace. But there’s something uniquely thrilling about soaring above it all, suspended in the sky with nothing but the wind beneath you. That’s exactly what I experienced on my recent parasailing adventure in South Padre Island. My wife and I, always on the lookout for new ways to enjoy the ocean, decided to give parasailing a try. We were not disappointed.

The day began with a warm welcome at SPI Excursions, located next to the Lobo Del Mar Cafe. The check-in process was smooth and efficient, a testament to the family-run operation’s expertise. We were introduced to Bart, our boat captain, whose calm demeanor and obvious proficiency in the water immediately put us at ease. As a Navy veteran, Bart ran the trip with military precision, yet managed to keep the atmosphere light and fun.

The Thrill of the Flight

Once we were out on the water, the anticipation built as we watched others take their turns soaring into the sky. When it was finally our turn, the crew expertly harnessed us in, and before we knew it, we were lifted off the deck and into the air. The sensation of rising above the clear waters of Laguna Madre Bay was exhilarating. With 600 feet of line, we were treated to breathtaking views of the entire island, the bay, and even a glimpse of SpaceX in the distance.

The flight was smooth, with Bart skillfully maneuvering the boat to maximize our air time. We opted for the optional dips, and the thrill of skimming the water with our feet and then being lifted back into the sky was indescribable. The crew’s attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the experience, from the tight pulls that created altitude to the gentle tow-in that brought us back to the boat with a walk-on landing.

A Perfect Day on the Island

After our parasailing adventure, we couldn’t resist trying out SPI’s jet ski tour, which was just as thrilling and well-organized. The professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff made both experiences unforgettable. It’s rare to find an operation that combines efficiency with such a personal touch, but SPI Excursions nailed it.
