- Sterkfontein Cave - Located on the edge of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa, the Sterkfontein Caves are renowned for their archaeological significance. In 1949, R. Broom unearthed the skull of “Mrs. Ples,” Plesianthropus transvaalensis, a member of the Australopithecus africanus family (the ancient apes of Africa). This discovery indicates that hominids inhabited the area around 3 million years ago. Due to natural catastrophic events, these species underwent significant evolutionary changes, leading to the emergence of Homo robustus, H. erectus, H. habilis, and Homo sapiens (the species to which modern humans belong). During this period, the supercontinent Pangea split into Gondwana and Laurasia, prompting species to adapt to new environments.
Although this is largely theoretical, the search for the missing link continues. Visitors are encouraged to explore the Cradle of Humankind and perhaps make their own discoveries.

Maropeng Visitor Centre - “Maropeng” is a Setswana word meaning “home,” symbolizing the place of our origins. In English, the phrase “there’s no place like home” is expressed by Batswana as “Maropeng go a boela.” This exhibition center offers fascinating insights into Mrs. Ples and human evolution.
Visitors can experience the lifestyle of early hominids, explore the Tumulus representing the caves where they lived, and learn how they harnessed naturally occurring fire to keep warm during winter. The center also delves into the natural elements—ice, wind, fire, and earth—and their role in Earth’s formation. Additionally, visitors can view replicas of several fossils discovered in the Cradle of Humankind area, and with some luck, they might even see real fossils.
