• Agia Irini Gorge - Situated in the southwest of Crete, Agia Irini Gorge is 43 km from Chania Town. The gorge begins at the village of Agia Irini in Selinou and stretches for 7 km. The extended 12 km hike concludes at Sougia, a charming small coastal village on Crete’s southern coast. The landscape is adorned with rocks and boulders, and the towering mountain sides guide visitors along the rocky riverbed. The plane trees, cypress pines, and maple trees, contrasted with the pink oleander flowers, create a breathtaking scene. The gorge and its surroundings are home to several endemic species, numerous flowers, birds, and the rare Cretan wild goat (kri kri). There are numerous signs and rest stops along the path. It’s advisable to bring plenty of water. A café is available at the start of the walk. Allocate 3-4 hours for the hike, allowing time for breaks, enjoying the scenery, and capturing nature through photography.
