Pompeii Archaeological Park - Pompeii is a remarkable archaeological site located in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the Bay of Naples. Once a flourishing and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under layers of ash and pumice following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
-
Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for all major public buildings related to city administration, justice, business management, trade activities like markets, and the main places for citizen worship.
-
Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter dominates the northern side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius rising majestically behind it. When the colony was established (80 BC), the temple underwent significant renovation and became a true Capitolium, featuring three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to those in Rome’s Capitolium, placed on a high base to be visible to all in the Forum square.
-
Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. Copies of two marble statues, a female and a male warrior, are located in the niches of the side wall, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely representing an emperor, Titus or Vespasian, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. To the left is a room for sacred board meetings, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
-
Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. In ancient times, the street was bustling and lively with numerous shops, workshops (“officinae”), cafes, snack bars, and restaurants offering food and drink.
-
Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - The Forum Baths, located behind the Temple of Jupiter, date back to the years following the founding of the veteran colony by General Silla (80 BC). Separate entrances were provided for women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section includes an apodyterium (dressing room), also used as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths), and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 62 AD.
-
Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is renowned for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city’s elite. The house belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero’s second wife.
-
Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most renowned brothel in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. It is particularly notable for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for “brothel.” The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande. The prostitutes in the brothel were primarily Greek and Oriental slaves who were paid between two and eight Asses (a glass of wine cost one As) for their services.
-
Teatro Grande - The Large Theater of Pompeii was constructed by the Romans on the slope of a hill in the area, utilizing the natural depression of the mountain to create a majestic auditorium divided into five sectors. Tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions were performed on the stage.
-
Basilica - The Basilica, covering an area of 1,500 square meters, was the most opulent building in the Forum, used for conducting business and administering justice.
-
Vesuvius National Park - Drop off at 1,000 meters high on the Volcano. Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. In 79 AD, its eruption destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Mount Vesuvius doesn’t stand alone. While the ‘main peak’ is named Vesuvius, there is another mountain attached to it, Monte Somma. It is listed among the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Volcanologists and geologists agree that the next volcanic eruption is overdue and that when it occurs, it will be significant. The layer of magma beneath Vesuvius measures a vast 154 square miles; this is why scientists monitor the volcano’s activity 24/7.
-
Vesuvius National Park - Reach the crater’s edge at 1,280 meters to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Naples. The path’s surface is uneven, but the experience is well worth it. Following the devastating eruption, it was named after the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery – Vulcan.
