- Pompeii Archaeological Park - Located in southern Italy’s Campania region near the Bay of Naples, Pompeii is a vast archaeological site. Once a bustling Roman city, it was buried under layers of ash and pumice following Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 A.D. Visitors can explore the preserved ruins of streets and homes.
- Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade, and worship.
- Tempio di Giove Capitolino - Overlooked by Vesuvius, this temple featured statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to the Capitolium in Ancient Rome. The statues were prominently displayed for those in the Forum.
- Macellum - Situated on the Forum, the Macellum was Pompeii’s main market and a key part of the ancient city. It underwent several construction phases and was damaged during the 62 CE earthquake.
- Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, these baths date back to the founding of the veteran colony by General Silla (80 BC). Separate entrances existed for men and women. The men’s section included a dressing room (apodyterium), which also served as a tepidarium, frigidarium, and calidarium. The baths suffered significant damage in the 62 AD earthquake.
- Via dell’Abbondanza - This was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. It was lively and bustling with shops, workshops, cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants.
- Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most renowned brothel in the ancient city, noted for its erotic wall paintings. “Lupanar” is Latin for “brothel,” and it is also known as Lupanare Grande.
- Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun is one of Pompeii’s largest and most opulent private homes, occupying an entire city block. Named after the famous bronze statue of a dancing faun in its main atrium, it showcases Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is renowned for the Alexander Mosaic, depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With two peristyle gardens and intricate mosaics, it symbolizes the wealth and refined taste of the city’s elite.
- Teatro Grande - The Large Theater of Pompeii was constructed by the Romans on a hillside, utilizing the natural landscape to create a grand auditorium divided into five sectors. It hosted Greco-Roman tragedies.
- Basilica - Covering 1,500 square meters, the Basilica was the most lavish building in the Forum, used for business and justice administration.
- Vesuvius National Park - Drop-off at 1,000 meters on the Volcano. Mount Vesuvius, a somma-stratovolcano, is located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples. The 79 AD eruption destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. Vesuvius is accompanied by Monte Somma and is considered one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. Scientists monitor its activity continuously due to the large magma layer beneath it, measuring 154 square miles.
- Vesuvius National Park - Reach the crater’s edge at 1,280 meters to enjoy a stunning view of the Gulf of Naples. The path is uneven, but the experience is rewarding. Following the eruption, it was named after Vulcan, the Roman God of Flame and Metal Forgery.
