- Abydos - Located in Middle Egypt, Abydos is an ancient sacred site and burial ground for the rulers of the late prehistoric proto-kingdom, as well as the earliest known kings of the politically unified Egyptian state.
In northern Abydos, buildings from the Predynastic era have been discovered around Kom es-Sultan. Recent excavations have uncovered an Old Kingdom residential area to the southeast, featuring a street lined with mudbrick houses with courtyards and a faience workshop complete with kilns.
Abydos is renowned for “The Cult of Osiris,” the god of the dead. Legend has it that Osiris’s head was buried at this site after his brother murdered him.
- Dendera Temple Complex - The path leading to the Temple of Hathor is flanked by two Roman fountains and culminates at the grand entrance gate. Hathor, the goddess of pleasure and love, is often depicted as a cow or a woman with a cow’s head.
The enclosure walls, made of mud-brick, date back to the Roman era. Inside these walls are the temple, two birth houses, a Coptic Basilica, a sanitarium, a sacred lake, and the Temple of the Birth of Isis. The temple boasts a rich history, with evidence of reconstruction by Pepi I (Old Kingdom), and references to renovations by Thutmose III, Amenhotep III, and Rameses II and III (New Kingdom). Further additions were made during the Greek, Roman, and Ptolemaic periods.
