The area of Skopje has been continuously inhabited since at least 4000 BC, with evidence of Neolithic settlements discovered within the ancient Kale Fortress, which overlooks the present-day city center. Initially a Paeonian city, Skopje became the capital of Dardania in the second century BC. As the 1st century AD approached, the Romans captured the settlement, transforming it into a military camp. Following the division of the Roman Empire into eastern and western sections in 395 AD, Skopje fell under Byzantine control from Constantinople. Throughout much of the early medieval era, the town was a point of contention between the Byzantines and the Bulgarian Empire, serving as the Bulgarian capital from 972 to 992.
