Buzludzha is a notable peak in the Central Balkan Mountains of Bulgaria, standing at 1,432 meters. In 1868, it was the site of the last battle between Bulgarian rebels, led by Hadji Dimitar and Stefan Karadzha, and the Ottoman Empire’s forces. The Buzludzha Monument, also known as the House-Monument of the Bulgarian Communist Party, was erected on this peak by the Bulgarian communist regime. It honors the events of 1891, when a group of socialists, led by Dimitar Blagoev, gathered secretly in the area to establish an organized socialist movement, which eventually led to the creation of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, a precursor to the Bulgarian Communist Party. Construction of the monument commenced on January 23, 1974, under the guidance of architect Georgi Stoilov, a former mayor of Sofia and co-founder of the Union of Architects in Bulgaria. The building is a prime example of the brutalist architectural style, typical of many state-constructed communist structures.
