City Tour Siwa
Shali Fortress - Starting at 9:00 am, Central Siwa is dominated by the impressive organic shapes of this 13th-century mud-brick fortress. Constructed from kershef (salt chunks from the nearby lake mixed with rock and plastered in local clay), the labyrinth of buildings was originally four or five stories high and housed hundreds. A path leads over the remnants, past the Old Mosque with its chimney-shaped minaret, to the top for panoramic views.
Mountain of the Dead - This mountain contains numerous tombs. The tombs, covering every inch of its base and situated on its terraces and all sides of the conical part, date from the 26th dynasty, the Greek, and the Roman periods, though there appear to be no Christian burials.
Temple of the Oracle of Amun / Aghurmi - The 26th-dynasty Temple of the Oracle is located in the northwest corner of the Aghurmi village ruins. Built in the 6th century BC, likely on top of an earlier temple, it was dedicated to Amun (sometimes referred to as Zeus or Jupiter Ammon) and symbolized the town’s wealth. It is believed that Alexander the Great was declared the son of Amun in this temple.
Cleopatra’s Pool - Spring of Juba - One of Siwa’s most famous attractions, Cleopatra’s pool is a stone pool fed by a natural hot spring, where the Egyptian queen is said to have swum during her visit to Siwa. Tourists have been enjoying a refreshing swim here for years, especially after a hot summer day tour!
Hayaat Siwa Hot Spring - This secluded pool is located on a small island in the salty Birket Siwa, accessible via a narrow causeway. Nicknamed ‘Fantasy Island’ for its picturesque setting, the pool is about 6km from Siwa Town and surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery. It’s a perfect spot to watch the sunset, with a small cafe among the palms offering tea or juice. Now it’s time to watch the sunset from Fitnas Island, enjoy the view with fresh juice, and perhaps take a paddle-boat ride.
The Traditional Siwa House - Learn about the culture and history of the Siwan people at the Siwan house.
