- Peles Castle - Constructed by Romania’s first King, Carol I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Peles Castle was built between 1873 and 1914. By 1883, the year it was inaugurated, it served as a summer residence. From 1890 to 1914, under the guidance of Czech architect Karel Liman, who is regarded as the principal architect, the castle underwent transformation and expansion. Initially (1883), the dominant style for both the exterior and interior was the German neo-Renaissance, with exceptions in the neo-Ottoman and neo-Rococo styles. During the second phase (1890-1914), significant modifications to the structure, façades, and interiors enhanced the previous styles, aligning the castle with the stylistic diversity of Historicism.
- Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) - Bram Stoker’s fictional character, Dracula, is depicted as a Transylvanian Count with a castle situated high above a valley, perched on a rock with a river flowing below in the Principality of Transylvania.
This character is often mistaken for Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), also known as Vlad Dracul, a Walachian Prince whose castle, now in ruins, was located in the Principality of Wallachia. Bran Castle is the only castle in Transylvania that matches Bram Stoker’s description of Dracula’s Castle, making it globally recognized as Dracula’s Castle. In Chapter 2, May 5 of “Dracula,” the Count’s castle is described as “. . . on the very edge of a terrific precipice . . . with occasionally a deep rift where there is a chasm [with] silver threads where the rivers wind in deep gorges through the forests.”
