Cape Saint Vincent - Cape St. Vincent is a headland located in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, southern Portugal. It is the southwesternmost point of Portugal and mainland Europe.
Cape St. Vincent has been considered sacred since Neolithic times, as evidenced by standing menhirs in the area. The ancient Greeks named it Ophiussa (Land of Serpents), inhabited by the Oestriminis, and dedicated a temple to Heracles here. The Romans referred to it as Promontorium Sacrum (or Holy Promontory). Strabo, in his Geography, described this cape as the most western tip of the known world and noted that it was considered magical. Local folklore suggested that the sun sank here with a hiss into the ocean, marking the world’s edge, which Strabo dismissed as “common and vulgar reports,” attributing them to Posidonius.

Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, known for its diverse tourist-friendly beaches, rock formations (Ponta da Piedade), bars, restaurants, and hotels, as well as its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Additionally, Lagos is a historic center of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequently hosting Henry the Navigator, and was once a prominent shipyard and center of the European slave trade. In 2012, the travel website TripAdvisor ranked Lagos as the number one travel destination.
