Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp - The trek continues from the Shira Plateau, heading east up a ridge and passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The route then shifts southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after, the path reaches a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft. The descent then begins to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft, where dinner and overnight rest await. Although the day ends at the same elevation as it began, it is crucial for acclimatization, aiding in preparation for the summit day.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Karanga Camp - After breakfast, the trek continues from Barranco along a steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall to reach the Karanga Valley campsite. This shorter day is designed for acclimatization.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Barafu Camp - Post-breakfast, the journey proceeds from Karanga to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail, continuing up to Barafu Hut. Here, the South Circuit is completed, offering diverse summit views. Camp is set up here, with time to rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this vantage point.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Mweka Camp to Moshi
Moshi - After breakfast, the descent continues to the Mweka Park Gate to collect summit certificates. Lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are useful. Shorts and t-shirts are generally sufficient, though rain gear and warmer clothing should be kept accessible.
From the gate, there’s an additional hour’s walk to Mweka Village, where a vehicle awaits to transport you back to the hotel.
