Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - After breakfast, climb the Sigiriya rock fortress or Pidurangala rock. The Sinhalese king Kassyapa (reigned 477–495) constructed a palace shaped like a monumental lion on several acres at the summit, designed as a defense against his enemies. However, the king was defeated in 495, and the palace fell into disrepair. The site soon became a pilgrimage destination and is now a popular tourist attraction. Visitors make the final ascent to the top through the lion’s open paws, one of the few remaining parts of the palace still intact. Also noteworthy are 21 rock paintings of Apsara (celestial singers and dancers).
Polonnaruwa - After lunch, depart for the royal city of Polonnaruwa. The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka’s second capital after Anuradhapura’s destruction in 993. It includes, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Return to Sigiriya in the evening.
Sigiriya - Dambulla - Kandy
Kandy - After breakfast, depart for Kandy, visiting the Dambulla rock cave Temple and Ceylon spices garden at Matale along the way. Overnight stay in Kandy.
The Dambulla cave temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a World Heritage Site and the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, located in the central part of the country. This site is situated 148 kilometers east of Colombo. There are five caves inside, each with a unique interior and statues, though at a quick glance, they may appear similar. The monastery dates back to the first century (BC) when it is believed the caves were converted. Over the years, it has been expanded and has housed many different religions. The caves you can visit today were restored and repainted by the Kingdom of Kandy in the 18th century.
Matale Herbal and Spice Garden - Visit the gardens at Matale. Sri Lanka’s spices mainly include Ceylon Cinnamon, Ceylon Pepper, Ceylon Cloves, Ceylon Cardamom, Ceylon Nutmeg, mace, and Vanilla. Ginger Essential Oil, Clove Essential Oil, Cardamom Oil, Ceylon Citronella Oil, and Ceylon Cinnamon Oil.
Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show - Enjoy a cultural show in the evening. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most important Buddhist religious sites in Sri Lanka. The sacred Tooth of the Buddha is enshrined in this magnificent temple. Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the ‘Sea of Milk’, is an artificial lake built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, located in the heart of the city. The Royal Palace, situated north of the Temple of the Tooth, was the royal residence of the Sinhalese monarchy of the Kingdom of Kandy. The ‘Magul Maduwa’, a finely carved timber masterpiece, is where the king met his ministers and conducted daily administrative tasks. Many historic events have occurred here, including the British handing over the death sentence to Sri Lankan national heroes Keppatipola Disave and Madugalle Disave. A replica of the Royal Audience hall of Kandy was constructed in granite in Colombo in 1948 to commemorate Sri Lanka’s Independence from the British.
