Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya stands as a stunning testament to ancient Sri Lankan art, architecture, and landscaping. Constructed over 1,600 years ago, this imposing 600 ft high black rock once resembled a massive, radiant white cloud hovering above the lush forests. Its sides were adorned with exquisite frescoes of semi-nude nymphs. A grand lion-shaped gatehouse guarded the entrance to the city’s innermost sanctum – the Sky Palace atop the rock. Sigiriya briefly rose to prominence before being abandoned and concealed within the forests for nearly 1,500 years. The climb to the summit is challenging but rewarding. It’s undoubtedly a must-visit destination!
Dambulla Cave Temple - Known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, this World Heritage Site is located in central Sri Lanka, 148 kilometers east of Colombo and 72 kilometers north of Kandy. Dambulla boasts the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya Museum - Managed by the Central Cultural Fund, the Sigiriya Museum is considered one of the most beautiful museums in South Asia. It showcases the cultural, technological, and archaeological significance of Sigiriya. Visitors can explore three decades of archaeological research on Sigiriya. The museum’s design draws inspiration from the intricate design systems found in Sigiriya itself. Notably, the clever use of water enhances the environment’s beauty and quality while conserving it for irrigation purposes, a feature replicated at the Sigiriya Museum.
Negombo - Negombo is often where travelers spend their initial days in Sri Lanka, recuperating from a long flight before embarking on their exploration of the country. The town is rich in churches, earning it the nickname ‘Little Rome’ due to the successful conversion of locals to Catholicism by Europeans. Most hotels and guesthouses are located along the main road that runs north from the town center, parallel to the beach.
Sigiriya - Referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World, this ancient palace and fortress complex holds significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists annually. It is arguably the most visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka.
SIGIRIYA-MINNERIYA-NEGOMBO
Minneriya National Park - Located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, after originally being declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938.
