Setting Sail on a Swahili Dhow

The morning sun was just beginning to peek through the clouds as I embarked on a journey that promised both adventure and tranquility. The drive from Diani to Shimoni was a scenic hour-long passage through rural villages, sugar cane plantations, and lush greenery. As a wildlife photographer, I am always on the lookout for the perfect shot, and the landscapes did not disappoint. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the crew and the sight of our traditional Swahili dhow, ready to set sail towards Kisite Marine Park.

The dhow cut through the waves with grace, and soon the clouds parted to reveal a brilliant blue sky. The shoreline, dotted with mangroves, was a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region. The modest supplement for the lobster and prawns was well worth it, and the dessert of fresh mangoes was the perfect ending to a memorable meal.

It was a fitting conclusion to a day that had been meticulously organized, allowing us to relax and enjoy every moment. As we sailed back to Shimoni, I reflected on the experience, grateful for the opportunity to witness the wonders of the marine world and the vibrant culture of the Kenyan coast.
