Full Day Trip in Baku
Gobustan Rock Art - On the way to Gobustan, you will pass through a landscape filled with oil rigs that supplied the USSR with oil for over 70 years. The first stop is the Gobustan Museum, offering deeper insights into the area’s history. This archaeological site is located 56 km from Baku. Discovered between 1939 and 1940, the site features over 3,500 human and animal petroglyphs and 20 identified shelters. Mesolithic monuments are prominently displayed in the reserve, with numerous caves and carvings by early humans.
Mud Volcanoes - The tour continues to the Mud Volcanoes, located near Gobustan National Museum. Transportation will switch to Soviet Lada cars. Visitors can bring strong plastic bags to collect mud, reputed to be beneficial for the skin. Azerbaijan boasts the highest number of mud volcanoes globally, with about 300 located onshore, offshore, and on islands. This trip offers a unique opportunity to see these active volcanoes up close. After spending 15 minutes at the volcanoes, you will return to your vehicle.
Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibi-Heybat Mosque houses the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, and serves as a spiritual center for the region’s Muslims. Known locally as “the mosque of Fatima,” Alexandre Dumas described it during his 1840s visit. The original mosque was south of the tomb, with a 20-meter minaret to the west. Later additions included a crypt and niches south of the minaret, with inscriptions mentioning Fatali Khan, whose tombstone is now in the State Museum of History.
Ateshgah - Fire Temple - Discover why Azerbaijan is called the “land of fire” by visiting the 17th-century fire temple and a hill that has been burning for 4,000 years. A driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you directly to the Fire Temple, located 30 km from Baku in the southeastern part of the Surakhani settlement on the Absheron peninsula. Built in the 17th-18th centuries, Ateshgah is a fire temple constructed over natural gas flames. The earliest structure dates back to 1713, with the central temple built in 1810 by merchant Kanchanagara. It has been sanctified by Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs over time.
Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - After visiting the Fire Temple, the final destination is the Fire Mountain. This natural flame results from natural gas emerging at the hill’s base, burning continuously for 4,000 years, even in rain and snow. Yanardag Mountain, also known as Burning Hill, has been ablaze for centuries. Declared a State Historical-Cultural and Natural Reserve, it protects this natural wonder.
Shamakhi - Gabala - Sheki
Juma Mosque - En route from Baku to Gabala, visit the Juma Mosque in Shamakhi, a popular tourist attraction. Unlike many mosques, non-Muslims can enter the Juma Mosque. Visitors must remove their shoes, but the thick carpets make walking barefoot comfortable. Women must cover their heads, with free head coverings provided at the entrance, to be returned upon exit.
15 minutes, Admission is free
Diri Baba Mausoleum - The Diri Baba Mausoleum stands on a cliff square. This two-story building features a hall on the first floor, leading to an octagonal cupola via a small vestibule. Stairs carved into the cliff lead to the second-floor hall. The spherical cupola with a pointed top is adorned with plant motifs. The mausoleum’s architecture harmonizes with its picturesque surroundings, blending with the rocks and greenery. It is a masterpiece of the Shirvan architectural school and is protected by the government.
Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum - At the base of Gulistan Fortress lies the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, or “Seven Domes,” named for the seven gravestones in the crypt. This site is the burial place of notable Shirvan Dynasty rulers. The gravestones resemble half-destroyed stone domes emerging from the ground in a deserted graveyard, creating a mysterious atmosphere.
Nohur Lake - Nohur Lake, located near the Gabala-Ismayilli-Baku motorway, is a natural attraction visited by both international and local tourists. Situated 5 km east of Gabala city and about 200 km from Baku, the lake is surrounded by the Yumuru, Goydag, and Gulluburun mountains. Currently, Nohur Lake is 1925 m long, 1355 m wide, with a total area of 240 ha. Its maximum depth is 24 m, and it holds approximately 16 million m3 of water, located 700 meters above sea level.
Tufandag Mountain Resort - The Tufandag Winter-Summer Tourist Complex is 4 kilometers from Gabala city. The resort offers various extreme sports and tourism activities in harmony with nature. Tufandag provides skiing in winter, mountain ascents by cable cars in summer, ATV quad bike mountain climbing, and other entertainment. The ski slopes offer unforgettable experiences with a 1000-meter vertical descent, 15-kilometer ski slopes, and 4 rope lines. There are green and blue slopes for beginners and moderate skiers, and red and black slopes for professionals. Alongside natural snow, snowmobiles ensure a memorable skiing experience throughout the season. Skiing equipment is available for rent, and professional instructors offer ski lessons.

Seven Beauties Waterfall - This mountainous waterfall, originating from the highest peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, is located in Vandam village, Gabala. The Seven Beauties (Yeddi Gozal) Waterfall is named after the seven mountain roads leading to it. In winter, the waterfall freezes, making access challenging. In spring and summer, tea houses line the mountain roads, offering guests tea with traditional Gabala jam. At the waterfall’s highest point, a tea house with a special wooden mattress allows visitors to enjoy tea with the soothing sound and view of the waterfall. The tea’s water is sourced from the waterfall, giving it a unique flavor.
Sheki City Tour - Baku
Church of Kish - En route to Sheki, visit the first Albanian church in the Caucasus, dating back to the 1st century AD. The Kish Albanian Church, beautifully renovated, is a well-presented trilingual museum. It is the best place to learn about the mysterious Caucasian Albania, a Christian nation that once covered most of northern Azerbaijan.
Sheki Khan’s Palace - After breakfast, the tour begins with a car picking you up from your hotel for the Sheki city tour. The first stop is Sheki Khans Palace, built in 1762 as a summer residence for the Khan of Sheki. Remarkably, no nails or glue were used in its construction. The palace’s interior walls are adorned with paintings, each with its own philosophical meaning.
Sheki Karvansaray - The “Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki comprises two magnificent caravanserais, “Yukhari” and “Ashaghi,” meaning “Upper” and “Lower” in Azerbaijani. These caravanserais date back to the 18th-19th centuries. The “Lower” caravanserai has a rectangular shape with a large inner courtyard featuring a pool. Covering 8000 m2, its dimensions are 55x85 meters. Four entrances lead to the courtyard from the building’s corners. The lower caravanserai has 242 rooms, previously used for merchant stores and storage. The first floor was for guests, with rooms leased to them. Each room had a manhole connected to the ground floor by a stepladder, allowing merchants to monitor their goods’ safety.

The guide will explain the history of the Old City, Maiden Tower, and ancient buildings.
Palace of the Shirvanshahs - The next stop is the Shirvanshahs Palace, a gem of Azerbaijan’s architectural heritage. This former residence of Shirvan’s rulers is located in Baku’s heart. The complex includes the Divan-Khan courtyard, tomb, mosque from 1441, bathhouse, and the mausoleum of court scholar Seyid Yahya Bakuvi.
Bukhara Caravanserai - Constructed in the late 15th century along Icherisheher’s trade highway in Baku, the Bukhara caravanserai has a quadratic shape with a salient portal and an octagonal yard. Surrounded by balconies and personal premises, the yard served as a gathering place for travelers and merchants after daily trade. The restoration in 1964 removed later additions, revealing the caravanserai’s large-scale structure against the surrounding buildings.
Maiden Tower - The Maiden Tower is Baku’s equivalent of the Eiffel Tower. Built in the 12th century, it served as a fortress for the Shirvanshahs. Its architectural plan, seemingly simple, features extraordinarily thick walls at the base, narrowing towards the top. Today, the interior hosts an exhibition of old photographs and a souvenir shop, with a rooftop viewpoint offering stunning views of Baku Bay and the Old City. The climb is worthwhile for the panoramic views of the Old City, new skyscrapers, and the Caspian Sea.
Miniature Books - In the Old City, visit The Museum of Miniature Books (if open), located in Icheri Sheher. It holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of miniature books. The museum’s creator, Zarifa Salahova, has collected these books over 30 years. The world’s only museum of miniature books opened on April 2, 2002, and now houses over 5,600 books from 66 countries.
