Sightseeing Baku Tour
Icherisheher Historical-Architectural Reserve - The tour begins at the main entrance of Icheri Sheher (Old City), known as the Double Gates. Visitors will see the Chain, Sailor, and Cat Houses, Bukhara and Multani Caravanserais, Juma Mosque, and Maiden Tower. The guide will share the history of Icheri Sheher and its notable buildings. The Shirvanshah Palace, a gem of Azerbaijan’s architectural heritage and former residence of Shirvan rulers, is located in central Baku. The complex includes the Divan-Khan courtyard, a tomb, a mosque from 1441, a bathhouse, and the mausoleum of court scholar Seyid Yahya Bakuvi. The Bukhara caravanserai, built in the late 15th century, features a quadratic shape, a salient portal, and an octagonal yard surrounded by balconies and chapels. Restoration in 1964 revealed its grand structure. The Maiden Tower, Baku’s Eiffel Tower, served as a fortress in the 12th century. Its thick walls taper from five meters at the base to four meters at the top. Inside, visitors will find old photographs and a souvenir shop, with a rooftop offering stunning views of Baku Bay and the Old City.
Baku Boulevard - Known as the National Seaside Park, Baku Boulevard is a beloved promenade for residents and visitors, second in size only to the park along the River Seine in Paris. Established over 100 years ago, it stretches 3,750 meters along the Caspian Sea’s southern coast, from National Flag Square to Freedom Square. The area features museums, cultural facilities, malls, and entertainment centers, including the panoramic Devil’s Wheel with views over Baku Bay.
Dagustu Park (Upland Park) - Upland Park, also known as “Viewing Square” and formerly “Sergei Kirov Park,” is a favorite spot in Baku for walking, relaxing, and enjoying sea views. Visitors can breathe fresh air, enjoy city views, and sip tea at the Highland Park Café while listening to lounge music. It’s especially beautiful at night with its illuminated stairs. On hot summer days, the park offers a cool, breezy retreat.
Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum - The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum showcases various schools and techniques from across the country, highlighting the history and development of carpet weaving. In August 2014, the museum moved to a new building shaped like a rolled carpet, designed by Austrian architects Franz Janz and Walter Mari. The museum houses over 14,000 exhibits, including rare carpets, jewelry, clothing, embroidery, glass pieces, wood, and felt. The first floor features flat-weave carpets and applied arts, the second floor displays pile carpets from different regions, and the third floor focuses on modern designers, the museum’s history, and a children’s room. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00-18:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00-20:00, closed on Mondays.
Nizami Street / Tarqovi - The next stop on the Baku city tour is Nizami Street, where visitors have 15-20 minutes to explore the central street filled with shops and restaurants. Fountain Square, with its enchanting fountains, is also nearby.
Fountain Square - A popular spot for strollers, this leafy piazza is the heart of Central Baku. The fountains, including one with shiny silver spheres, reflect the trees and stone facades. The square also features the beautiful facade of the Nizami Literature Museum.
Gabala - Sheki Tour
Juma Mosque - En route from Baku to Gabala, the Juma Mosque in Shamakhi (or Friday Mosque) is a popular tourist attraction. Unlike many mosques, non-Muslims are welcome to enter. Visitors must remove their shoes, but the thick carpets make walking barefoot comfortable. Women are required to cover their heads, with free head coverings provided at the entrance.
Diri Baba Mausoleum - The Diri Baba Mausoleum is a two-story building on a cliff. The first floor has a hall leading to an octahedral cupola, while stairs carved into the cliff lead to the second floor. The mausoleum’s architecture harmonizes with its natural surroundings, making it a masterpiece of the Shirvan architectural school. The monument is government-protected.
Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum - Located at the foot of Gulistan Fortress, the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, or “Seven Domes,” is the burial site of Shirvan Dynasty rulers. The monument’s name reflects the number of gravestones in the crypt. The gravestones resemble half-destroyed stone domes, creating a mysterious atmosphere.
Nohur Lake - Nohur Lake, near the Gabala-Ismayilli-Baku motorway, is a natural attraction visited by tourists. Located 5 km east of Gabala city and about 200 km from Baku, the lake is surrounded by the Yumuru, Goydag, and Gulluburun mountains. It measures 1925 m in length, 1355 m in width, and covers 240 ha. The lake’s maximum depth is 24 m, with a water volume of about 16 million m3. It sits 700 meters above sea level. Visitors will then drive to Sheki for an overnight stay.
Sheki City Tour - Ganja
Church of Kish - On the way, visitors will see the first Albanian church in the Caucasus, dating back to the 1st century AD. The Kish Albanian Church, beautifully renovated, is now a trilingual museum. It’s an excellent place to learn about Caucasian Albania, the Christian nation that once covered much of northern Azerbaijan.
Sheki Khan’s Palace - Built in 1762 as a summer residence for the Khan of Sheki, the palace was constructed without nails or glue. The interior walls are adorned with paintings, each with its own philosophical meaning. In the garden, visitors will find two 500-year-old plane trees.
Karvansaray - The “Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki includes two caravanserais, “Yukhari” and “Ashaghi,” meaning “Upper” and “Lower” in Azerbaijani. Built in the 18th-19th centuries, the Lower caravanserai has a rectangular shape with a central pool. It covers 8000 m2 and measures 55x85 meters. Four entries lead to the yard from each corner. The lower caravanserai has 242 rooms, with merchant stores and storage rooms on the ground floor and guest rooms on the first floor. Since 1988, it has operated as a hotel complex with a national cuisine restaurant and luxury suites.
Turkish Bath House Chokek - This cultural monument, protected by UNESCO, was built in the 17th century from red brick. Located in central Ganja, near the Mall of Ganja, visitors can park for free and explore the city center.
Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum - The first mausoleum at Nizami’s tomb was built in the 13th-14th centuries. A new mausoleum was constructed in 1947, with the current building dating to 1991. Nearby, a sculpture depicts the great poet surrounded by his characters, and an artificial lake with five fountains symbolizes Nizami’s five major poems, the ‘Khamsa.’
Shah Abbas Mosque - Located in central Ganja and dating to 1606, Juma Mosque features a red-brick exterior and a large white dome. Commissioned by Sheykh Baheddin Mohammad Amil of the Persian Safavid Empire, the mosque once had an adjoining madrassa. Two minarets were added in the late 18th century.
Bottle House - The Bottle House, a local icon in Ganja, Azerbaijan, is a unique residence made entirely of glass bottles. Although it’s a private home with no official tours, visitors often stop to admire its engineering and creativity. Visitors can support the house’s maintenance by purchasing souvenirs from the stand under the porch.
Goygol (Blue Lake) & Maral Gol Tour
Lake Goygol - The enchanting mountain lakes of Goygol National Park are as iconic to the Ganja region as the Maiden’s Tower is to Baku. Lake Goygol has been featured on stamps, in poetry, paintings, and songs. Formed by an earthquake that blocked the Kürəkçay River, the lake is known for its pure mountain water.
Absheron Tour - Ateshgah & Yanardag
Ateshgah - Fire Temple - The Fire Temple reveals why Azerbaijan is known as the land of fire. Built in the 17th century, Ateshgah is located in the southeastern part of the Surakhani settlement on the Absheron peninsula, 30 km from Baku. The temple, built over natural gas flames, was sanctified by Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs.
Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - After visiting the Fire Temple, the tour continues to Yanar Dag, a natural burning flame resulting from natural gas at the hill’s base. Burning for approximately 4,000 years, even in rain and snow, Yanar Dag is located 25 km north of Baku in Mehemmedi village. Since 2007, it has been a state-protected conservation area.
Gobustan Rock Arts & Mud Volcanoes
Gobustan Rock Art - The tour begins with a car ride from the hotel to Gobustan, an archaeological monument 56 km from Baku. Discovered in 1939-1940, the site features over 3,500 human and animal paintings and petroglyphs. Visitors will first explore the Gobustan Museum for historical insights before heading to the Rock Mountain to see the carvings.
Mud Volcanoes - The tour continues to the Mud Volcanoes near Gobustan National Museum. Azerbaijan is home to about 300 mud volcanoes, the most in the world. Visitors will have the opportunity to see these active volcanoes up close before returning to their car.
Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibi-Heybat Mosque, containing the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum (a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad), is a spiritual center for Muslims and a significant Islamic architectural monument in Azerbaijan. Known locally as “the mosque of Fatima,” it was described by Alexandre Dumas during his 1840s visit. The mosque’s old structure included a minaret, crypt, and niches with inscriptions, including the name Fatali Khan.
