Outstanding Game Experience, Tumbili camping experience needs improvement - The game experience was outstanding, but the camping experience had some serious issues (detracting 1 point from review, but this might be a bigger issue for other travelers). First off, our driver/guide Godsen (spelling?) was a master of the savanna. If not for his driving and game seeking skills, the safari would have turned out a lot differently. The morning after a heavy rain, he managed to get us out of a muddy ditch that I thought would swallow the entire truck and cost us a day (later that day, he had to rescue a couple less experienced drivers). He was constantly on the radio finding out where the best game sightings were, and we managed to see every big game animal up close (within 20 feet), including a black rhino in Ngorongoro crater (the rhino was a bit further away, though). He also drove us up to the Mara river near the Kenyan border where we saw the great wildebeest (gnu) migration. He was so good at guiding and handling the vehicle that I began to call him "The Maestro." Try to request Godsen when you book your safari (the driver really makes a difference). The camping situation, however, was not ideal (to say the least). The first night in the Tumbili campsite, our tent leaked and we woke up with water underneath the mattresses and small pools near the foot of the tent. After requesting a new tent for the following night, they gave us a tent that smelled like mold and cat pee. Not the greatest. It could be that the safari company just rents the tents from the park services, but someone definitely needs to invest in new tents. The bathroom and shower facilities at the Tumbili campsite were very gross and barely functional. The shower head itself didn't work, so I had to take a splash bath from the faucet which was at knee level. The safari companies need to pressure the park service to update these facilities because they're really bad. There was also some disorganization during breakfast and dinner where we didn't have a table and chairs, so we had to balance our plates on our laps while eating. I know they can do better than this. To summarize: the game experience was outstanding, far exceeding my expectations. But the camping experience at Tumbili really needs some improvement. All other accommodations were good, though. So overall I feel like it was a good value for the money.

Observations Top, everything else flop - The wildlife observations and landscapes were excellent, with the only downside that wherever anything interesting could be seen, dozens of other vehicles were immediately there. Often it was even the case that so many vehicles were already there and observation was no longer possible. I.e. basically far too many vehicles in the parks. The accommodation was underground. While it was clear that camping was offered, neither mattresses, sleeping bags, cushions or covers were ever cleaned. (as confirmed by the property). At the first campsite even the shower didn't work and you could pour water over your body for cleaning with a bucket. On the second it was, due to the altitude, quite cold and the sleeping bags completely unsuitable for this climate. The food was simple and average at best, but this had to be expected at a campsite. With the simple means available, the chefs tried their best.
