Forest Camp (2750m) – Shira 1 Camp (3540m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 5.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Distance: 8 km
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
The trail continues out of the forest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichen beards. As the ascent progresses through lush rolling hills and across several streams, the Shira Ridge is reached before gently descending to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is breathtaking.
Shira 1 (3540m) – Shira 2 (3840m) - Moir Hut (4114m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today’s destination is a stunning camp located beneath Kilimanjaro’s Northern Ice Fields. The walk east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak is gentle, crossing the plateau to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. The journey continues to Moir Hut, a less frequented site at the base of Lent Hills. Various walks are available on Lent Hills, offering excellent acclimatization opportunities. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.
Moir Hut (4114m) - Lava Tower (4600m) - Barranco Camp (3950m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers
Habitat: Semi Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
From Moir Hut, the trail continues east up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The direction then shifts southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, the second junction leads up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. The descent continues to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft, where dinner and overnight rest await. Although the day ends at the same elevation as it began, it is crucial for acclimatization, preparing the body for summit day.
Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (4235m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This short hiking day is designed for acclimatization. After an early breakfast, it’s time to tackle the Great Barranco Wall! Though it may appear daunting, hikers often find this Class 2 hike easier than expected. At the Wall’s summit, views of Heim Glacier and the clouds below are spectacular. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley. The night is spent at Karanga Camp (3950m), with dinner and washing facilities available.
Karanga Camp (4235m) – Barafu Hut (4600m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following breakfast, the ascent begins. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, used for descent on the final two days. After an hour of hiking, Barafu Hut is reached. This is the last water stop for porters, as no water is available at Barafu Camp (4550m). “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, and the camp is situated on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents are exposed to wind and rocks, so familiarization with the campsite before dark is essential. An early dinner is served to allow rest before the summit attempt that night. The guide will provide a detailed briefing on summit night preparation. Sleep by 19:00!
Summit Attempt Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
The guide will wake hikers around 23:30 for tea and biscuits before beginning the summit attempt. The route heads northwest, ascending over stone scree. Many hikers find this the most mentally and physically challenging part of the climb. In about 6 hours, Stella Point (5685m) on the crater rim is reached. After witnessing the magnificent sunrise, the ascent continues for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime achievement! A short time is spent at the summit for photographs and tea before descending to Barafu. The descent to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours.
At camp, rest and a hot lunch in the sun are enjoyed. After eating, the descent continues to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail leads through scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, where fog and rain are expected. Dinner, washing, and a restful night await at camp.
Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking time: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Forest
Meals: Breakfast
After a well-deserved breakfast, the staff will host a lively celebration with dancing and singing. On the mountain, tips are presented to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. Hikers reaching Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates, while those reaching Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After receiving certificates, hikers descend into Mweka village for an hour (3 kilometers). A hot lunch is served before driving back to Moshi for long-awaited showers and further celebrations.
