Moshi – Londorossi Gate (2100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 3 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, the guide will provide a briefing for the day. The journey begins with a two-hour drive from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2100m). In the village near Londorossi Gate, hikers will receive a packed lunch and have the opportunity to purchase mineral water for the trek. The final 45-minute drive to the gate is on a rugged forest track, requiring 4WD vehicles. At the entrance gate, guides and porters will distribute supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). The 3-hour hike into the rainforest then begins. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys! An afternoon lunch break is scheduled along the way, with arrival at Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Campsite (2750m) in the early evening. Porters, who arrive at the campsite ahead of the hikers, will set up tents and boil water for drinking and washing. The chef will prepare a snack followed by dinner. Nighttime temperatures on the mountain may drop to freezing, so be prepared!
Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m) – Shira 2 Camp (3840m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 6.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After an early breakfast, the ascent continues out of the rainforest into the heather moorland zone. Hikers will cross several streams and traverse a plateau leading to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). This campsite is situated next to a stream and offers a stunning view of the Western Breach and its glaciers to the East. As with the first night, tents will be set up before hikers arrive, and porters will prepare water for drinking and washing. Evening snacks and dinner will be prepared by the chef. Prepare for a cold night as temperatures can drop below freezing at this exposed camp.
Shira (3840m) – Lava Tower (4630m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Semi-desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Following an early breakfast, the journey continues from the moorland into the semi-desert and rocky landscape. After 5 hours of walking east, hikers will encounter the Lava Tower (4630m). Packed lunches are served at the Tower, and weather permitting, hikers have the option to climb the massive Lava Tower. At this stage, it is common for hikers to experience altitude effects, including headaches and shortness of breath. After lunch, the descent from Lava Tower (4630m) to Barranco Campsite (3950m) begins. The 680m descent provides a significant advantage for acclimatization to high altitude conditions. The descent to camp takes about 2 hours. The campsite is located in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall (“Breakfast Wall”). Drinking and washing water and dinner will be served as hikers enjoy the sunset.
Barranco Camp (3950m) – Barafu Camp (4550m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 13 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After an early breakfast, it’s time to tackle the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may appear daunting, hikers often find this Class 2 hike easier than expected. At the top of the Wall, there is a view of Heim Glacier and hikers will be above the clouds. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley and intersects with the Mweka Route, used for descent on the final two days. After an hour of hiking, Barafu Hut is reached. This is the last water stop for porters as there is no water at Barafu Camp (4550m). “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, and this camp is on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents are exposed to wind and rocks, so hikers should familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner is served so hikers can rest before the summit attempt that night. The guide will provide a detailed briefing on summit night preparation. Aim to sleep by 19:00!
Summit Attempt Barafu Camp (4550m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
The guide will wake hikers around 23:30 for tea and biscuits before beginning the summit attempt. The route heads northwest, ascending over stone scree. Many hikers find this the most mentally and physically challenging part of the climb. In about 6 hours, Stella Point (5685m) on the crater rim is reached. After enjoying the breathtaking sunrise, the ascent continues for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime achievement! A short time is spent at the summit for photographs and tea before descending to Barafu. The descent to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours.
At camp, hikers rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After lunch, the descent continues to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail leads through scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rainforest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rainforest, where fog and rain are common. Dinner, washing, and a restful night await at camp.
Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Hiking duration: 3 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Forest
Meals: Breakfast
After a well-deserved breakfast, the staff will host a lively celebration with dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that hikers present tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. Following the celebration, the descent to Mweka Gate takes about three hours. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive completion certificates. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates, while those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After receiving certificates, hikers descend into Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometers). A hot lunch is served before driving back to Moshi at the hotel for long-awaited showers and further celebrations.
