• Zhujiajiao Ancient Town - Located just an hour from Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is a charming water town with a history spanning approximately 1,700 years. The town boasts 36 stone bridges and numerous rivers, with many ancient buildings still adorning the riverbanks. The historic buildings and stone streets are lively with food vendors and shops. Gondola rides along the canals are a popular activity. A visit to the Qing Dynasty Post Office and Yuanjin Buddhist Temple will complete your water town experience.
• Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - Dating back to 1559 during the Ming Dynasty, this classic Chinese garden is rich in history. Visitors can explore a variety of halls, statues, rock formations, and water features, including the renowned Grand Rockery and Exquisite Jade Rocks.
• Yuyuan Old Street - Situated near Yuyuan Garden, this area represents old Shanghai with its intricate network of shops, streets, and venues offering a taste of Shanghai’s folk customs, authentic snacks, and local cuisine. The vibrant lamps on the antique buildings create a stunning landscape.
• The Bund (Wai Tan) - The Shanghai Bund features numerous historical buildings along the Huangpu River, which once housed banks, trading houses, and consulates from Europe, Asia, and the United States. This area showcases Shanghai’s western architectural and cultural influences and offers a scenic walkway along the river, providing insights into Shanghai’s history.
• Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu) - Standing at 468 meters (1,535 feet), this iconic Shanghai landmark was the tallest structure in China from 1994 to 2007. It is designated as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. The observation deck in the highest sphere offers a 360-degree view with a glass floor.
• Former French Concession - Experience the unique blend of eastern and western influences in this historically significant area, where colonial powers once had a strong presence in Shanghai. The area is known for its distinctive architecture and bustling atmosphere along tree-lined streets.
• Jade Buddha Temple - Established in 1882, the Jade Buddha Temple houses two jade Buddha statues brought to Shanghai from Burma by sea. These include a sitting Buddha (1.95 meters tall, 3 tons) and a smaller reclining Buddha symbolizing the Buddha’s death. The temple also features a larger reclining Buddha made of marble, donated from Singapore.
• Fuxing Park - Situated in the former French Concession, Fuxing Park was once Shanghai’s largest park, designed by the French in 1909. Spanning about 10 hectares, it includes a lake, fountains, covered pavilions, and flowerbeds. In the early morning, the park is lively with dancers, card players, mahjong enthusiasts, tai chi practitioners, and artists.
