The concept of “Speakeasy” dates back to the 1920s, a time when Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly, bubble gum was invented, and numerous other exciting events made headlines. However, the introduction of a certain law led to a rebellion that was both dark and cunning. This was the prohibition of alcohol in the United States and Canada, commonly known as Prohibition. People resisted these restrictions, leading to the emergence of “speakeasies.”

Speakeasies were hidden sections within establishments where alcoholic beverages were sold illegally during Prohibition. Some speakeasies resembled modern clubs, featuring singing and jazz performances. To gain entry, patrons needed to provide a password to the doorman to prove they were not undercover agents. Today, several speakeasies can be found along Shanghai’s interstates, adding an element of mystery and fun.
