People’s Square (Renmin Guang Chang) - The tour guide will meet the group at the hotel at 09:00 a.m. From there, the group will travel to People’s Square using public transportation to begin the highlight tour.
Shanghai People’s Square is centrally located in Shanghai, marking the division between East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. It is a vibrant area for exploration.
Before 1949, the site of Shanghai People’s Square and the People’s Park was a renowned horse racetrack, established in 1861 and celebrated as the ‘No.1 Racetrack in the Far East’. Visitors can still see the remnants of the former main building in the northeast part of the People’s Square.
The tour will include many scenic spots around People’s Square, such as the new Municipal Government Mansion, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai History Museum, and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. The group will also visit the Shanghai Museum. -
Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - Situated in the heart of Shanghai at People’s Square, the Shanghai Museum is a large institution dedicated to ancient Chinese art. Its design and presentation immerse visitors in artifacts that reflect ancient wisdom and philosophy. The museum’s round dome and square base symbolize the ancient concept of a round heaven and a square earth.
The museum features eleven galleries and three exhibition halls. The galleries cover major categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities. -
Shanghai Grand Theater - The group will admire the facade of the Shanghai Grand Theater.
The Shanghai Grand Theater boasts a unique and beautiful design, blending Western and Chinese architectural styles seamlessly. The white arched vault complements the glass curtain walls, resembling a crystal palace. - Hotel Park Hotel Shanghai - Park Hotel is one of Shanghai’s oldest hotels and was once the tallest building in the city. It serves as the central origin of Shanghai’s urban coordinate axis. Park Hotel is considered an architectural milestone, adding historic charm to the lively cityscape.
The group will then stroll along Nanjing Road, exploring nearby communities and the thinnest building.
-
Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road) - Nanjing Road is known as the ‘No. 1 commercial street in China’ and has been a city landmark for many years. Spanning 5.5 kilometers, it features over 600 shops, attracting approximately 1.7 million visitors daily. Here, one can find everything from affordable souvenirs to luxurious global brands. The group can also explore the surrounding neighborhoods and the thinnest building.
The thinnest building on Ningbo Road is known as the Paper Building (纸片楼).
The building was once featured in the British Daily Mail, described as possibly the world’s flattest and thinnest building. Viewed from a 30° angle, it resembles a piece of paper. The old house has four floors and is not entirely thin; it is shaped like a triangular polygon. This unique building still houses many residents.
Next, the group will walk to Huanghe Road, which is lined with delightful eateries, perfect for a quick meal. Based on preferences, the guide will recommend a dining spot, ranging from a small local eatery to an elegant restaurant.
In the afternoon, the group will explore Yuayuan Old Street, visit Yu Garden, and the Temple of the Town God.
- Yuyuan Old Street - Shanghai Old Street, historically known as Miaoqian Dajie, is a historic business street featuring tourist attractions, shops, entertainment, and cultural exhibits. Its unique social appeal and rich commercial history stem from being home to the city’s earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler’s store, wine shop, and tea house. Exploring the old alleys of Shanghai offers a glimpse into the city’s traditional culture and the real life of the Shanghainese.
-
Yu Garden (Yuyuan) - The group will then tour Yu Garden, initially constructed in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, Minister Pan En, in his old age. Pan Yunduan began the project after failing an imperial exam, but his appointment as governor of Sichuan delayed construction for nearly twenty years until 1577.
Yu Garden is small but contains all the elements of a classical Chinese garden. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, and cloisters each have unique features. The garden is divided into six areas, each with its own style. -
Shanghai Temple Of the Town God (Chenghung Miao) - The Old Town God Temple of Shanghai, with its extensive history, attracts numerous tourists worldwide. In addition to praying, visitors can enjoy folk performances, participate in cockfighting, special calligraphy, and other acrobatic performances. The Old City God Temple is renowned for its local snacks, making it a culinary haven with various restaurants lining the streets.
The group will then visit the oldest temple - Longhua Temple. -
Longhua Temple - Longhua Temple is the oldest temple in Shanghai, boasting a history of over 1,700 years. Visitors marvel at the city’s modern architecture and historical sites. Besides its long history, Longhua Temple is the largest temple in Shanghai, covering over 20,000 square meters (five acres) with architectural proportions of about 5,000 square meters (1.2 acres). The entire courtyard is built in traditional Buddhist symmetry, aligning with the Chinese concept of beauty.
The group will then explore the Historical Sites along Wukang Road and Hengshan Road. -
Wukang Road - Wukang Road is 1.17 km long, featuring 21 outstanding city-level historical buildings and 22 district-level cultural protection relics. Each house and its details tell stories and history. All the buildings on the road are in European style, and walking on Wukang Road feels like being in Europe.
Wukang Building is the most famous structure on Wukang Road. Shaped like a giant vessel, it was the most renowned English-styled building in Shanghai during the 1930s. The Wukang Building was designed by Hudec, the well-known architect.
Afterwards, the group will return to the hotel by private transportation. Cherish the memories and bid farewell at the hotel.
